Online bike shop list 2014

Postby Leaf T » Sat Aug 09, 2014 1:57 pm

I'm gonna buy some bike stuff and I had a quick look for a list of online bike shops on BNA but didn't find one. I reckon it would be useful to have one for us tourers so we can share our collective knowledge. It could be bike shops or other useful sites like camping gear etc. Any suggestions on how to go about it? Perhaps just post with a link and any comments if needed?

Cheers,
Andy

Have you seen the side bar at the right of the posts?

There is a few on the side of the forum pages - clicking through from here generates referrals and helps support the forums.

Ones I've used include:

Wiggle
ProBikeKit
Cell
Torpedo7
PlanetX
Ribble
Chain Reaction

If you want to use this thread as a list, people can just add their suggestions or they can use the quote button to copy the list from the post before theirs so we have all sites in the latest/last post.

We are not blind, and few would not be aware of those sites, but they are of no specific interest to cycle tourists.

Familiar with those thanks. Clicking through would be good but as Ron said they're not generally the first go to for touring related gear. Some I have used include Bike 24 and StarBike as well as SJS and others. It seems a new retailer pops up occasionally so it would be good to put it out there for others. I recall a French seller being mentioned on BNA but can't recall the name.

Have used Abbottsford Cycles and Commuter Cycles in VIC via Web. Have not used Cheeky Transport in NSW but they seem to be touring oriented.

Rosebikes Be warned they don't take VAT off straight away. Pay with credit card so you can get it removed.
Yep I'm fond of xxcycles as well. Gotten a few things from them.

Having just placed multiple orders for various touring parts I was suprised at how few online stores provide an end to end encrypted shopping experience, or make it difficult to obtain a shipping cost, or don't remove VAT or local taxes. They process thousands of dollars or orders and can't setup a https shopping site properly.

https://www.bike24.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is one that provides an entire encrypted shopping session, easy to obtain shipping quote, and removes VAT at checkout. Too bad they were slower to process the order and shipping is slower otherwise they might get more business.

Google have recently said https sites will be a factor in their search rankings. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot. ... ignal.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Perhaps they could also follow their own advice with that blog.

Glad to see it shaping up. KGB's suggestion of continuing the list is a good one in case this thread gets very long. We can also use the links to the right if we want to click through. A short description of what the site offers is good but perhaps any longer comments or experiences with a retailer can be added outside of the list?

I can't get the links to change to my wording so if anyone wants to tidy it up or add to it then please do.

From IP,
xxcycles - really good for built-up dynohub wheels.

St Johns Street Cycles (SJ Cycles)in the UK. Don't know if they deliver to Aus, but worth a try for touring stuff.
Oops saw you've already used SJS, disregard post

Thanks richbee, Looks like the main retailers plus some I've not used so will be useful to have them here.

SJS have an excellent range of gear. Postage can be a deal breaker sometimes but not always. Starbike used to be good but it seems like their range is getting smaller of late.

More below courtesy of mibmab at bikeforums.net... http://www.bikeforums.net/europe/323099 ... urope.html

Here is a list of German online shops that I recently posted on uk.rec.cycling:

Bike Palast
Bike Discount
Radsport Bornmann (cheap, but slow)

Some more links which also have english websites...
Action Sports
Bike24
Bikeparts Online
Bike Components

And then there are some of the bigger ones, yet just in German:
Boc24
Bruegelmann
Preiswerte Fahrradteile
Fahrrad.de

One of the best online shops for outdoor products also sells some bicycle
accessories:
Globetrotter

And these ones are nice if you are into vintage bicycles:
Classic Cycle
Velo Classic

see more at de-rec-fahrrad Haendlerliste

To translate technical terms, have a look at
ADFC Bictionary

As for UK shops, I only know Wiggle, Edinburg Bicycle Cooperative and Evans Cycles.

A German site that looks to have a good range. They were mentioned in another thread by RonK so perhaps RonK will be able to tell us more

I've used these guys for some harder to find bits.
Recently had a VDO mount break and they just sent me another one. Just sent them a photo. No mailing the old one back.
Can highly recommend them

From a blog. Includes rankings and updated early September 2016 Not touring specific but still useful. Keep in mind you can click through on BNA via the links for many of those listed.
