maybe a cheaper way to get one's hands on a Rohloff. A new one from Starbikes looks to be around $1,133 + depending on the configuration. I wonder if they will sell just the rear wheel

I'd almost wonder about the provenance. Anyone who had set up such a bike with a Rohloff hub would have to know its value surely (unless the whole bike was brought with them from Germany)

Given that the hub is almost nine years old it doesn't seem excessively under priced. I mean its not like buying a rohloff is equivalent to investing in gold bullion (even though its almost in the same price bracket )

Thanks to this thread i am now the owner of a Rohloff hub!...(and a second hand bike) but that's really not the point of this post.

I had a phone chat with the folks who were selling the bike - The bike was owned by a lovely couple (Geoffrey and Virginia) who in their words are getting too old to ride...These lovely people were in the mix amongst the founders of the old Bicycle Institute of Victoria - That was enough for me and clinched the deal...

In terms of provenance it doesn't get much better. When i went to pick the up the bike in their garage they had framed (Melbourne Sun) articles from Keith Dunstan from the late '1970's predicting a 'cycling revolution'...as we know Keith recently passed away...his revolution stands!

I assumed when picking the bike up that it would be the usual cast the eye over the item - hand over the cash - a few niceties and bang its over. I spent the better part of an hour with these beautiful people as they reminisced about their cycling heritage...riding tandems with Keith and the whole back story. It seemed to me (and i really hope this was the case) that they were happy that their bike was going to someone who really valued their cycling roots and that their 'beloved' Rohloff would be living another good few chapters with someone who cares!

I had to tell them that i was intending to use the wheel on my touring bike...they completely got it!

So I have a well maintained and worn in Rohloff - estimated K's traveled < 5,000!

Pondering my next move...I think that's the plan Tim - But i'm not sure just how to configure it - Could mean getting trekking bars as I have (as you) the 2012 VWR bar ends model and theres no way to fit the standardshifter onto drop bars..I would also need to have the tensioner fitted too ...the eccentric BB option is pretty pricey and would mean a new crankset too.

Well, I have a Co-motion shifter for drop bars (never used) but the trekking bar option may be cheaper.

theres no way to fit the standardshifter onto drop bars..

Van Nichols do a drop bar for Rohloff there's a retailer in Aus. Comes with an adjustable stem. Bar splits in half and has a collar over it, has a groove for brake cables to run under the standard twist shifter. Check the dimensions it's bigger/longer than compact drop bars.

My initial reaction is to try brake from near wherever the shifter is, and not sure how to fit a brake from the tops. Maybe on the left side but there's limited space on the right due to the shifter position. Or maybe run the front brake on the left, so have the stronger brake and a hand on the shifter on the right.
