About 5yrs ago my son showed me an ebay listing 3 days after it ended, which p..ed me off. It was an Eddy Merckx that had been presented to a retiring Merckx frame builder. The bike was the eleventh bike built, was used as a display for customers, and as such had never been ridden. It was pristine and came with documentation, sold for $2300.00, which I think was a true bargain. I still talk to my son occasionally.

Casati Monza, part built now. Saddle position is set, shifters are not quite in final position as I think the bars will rotate forward a tad more dep. upon how my hands sit on the flat section in the drops.

Just pulled out a few bikes and dusted off the cobwebs to show Tony from this forum. He dropped in to borrow a Stronglight crank puller for his lovely PX10.
Its great to meet folks off this forum in the flesh.

I realised I hadn't ridden the Healing since Noosa last year ..or was it the year before?? Bad... I will ride it this weekend
I also was reminded how much I like the mAdison even though its too big for me. If anyone would love it and ride it let me know and I'll do a good deal
Its basically a heavy old clunker wth Adamas but looks sweet.

The bikes on the far right I've been attacking with coloured anodised looking colour wash paint. Looks nice but I guess it might all wear off?

A better picture of the gold paint on my regular road bike. The old Record cranks were getting corrossion on them anyway and I needed to do something to improve the cosmetics. I think I put it a bit heavy on the cranks though as its a different shade to the rear mech. I might have to do the rear mech again.

Thanks for the interesting photos koen. The group shot shows some of your interesting bikes and I'm impressed with the gold painted components. From the photo it looks like your painting technique is pretty darn good. I suppose the paint will eventually 'age' but it's not like it can't be re-done or stripped off completely. I've never thought of painting crank arms or a rear derailleur before although I have painted a nuovo record front derailleur to resemble a super record derailleur. You've definitely given me something to think about in the future.

Which paint is that? It's clear looking, which will be nice painting over a possible future Vitus.

Here is my latest build, unknown manufacturer although almost certainly built for one of the Melbourne bike shops, maybe Hillman. Tange Champion no. 2 tubing with a mix of period parts.











Once I'm happy with the lever positions it'll be on with the bar tape

Simply a very nice bike, I especially like your Dura Ace ax brakes. I bought some Dura Ace ax brakes and brake calipers at a swap meet earlier this year not realising just how beautiful they were. Since then I've bought the cranks and pedals, stem, fd and Dt shifters. Just love the quality.

I love this thread and finally I can make a contribution.

After spending a long time looking for a frame to build into a retro-modern bike I finally found this Pinarello Montello. It has been very nicely repainted and the origanal chrome is in very good condition with only a few chain marks on the chainstay.

This was the top of the line Pinarello model in the late 80's and Montello riders won the Giro, Vuelta, Olympics and stages of the Tour de France. I think this must be a late 1980’s model as it has Pinarello dropouts where the earlier ones used Campagnolo. It also has 130mm rear spacing, so perfect for what I want. I have sourced most of the following parts already and will hopefully build it up in the next month.

• Campagnolo Athena Silver groupset
  Campagnolo Record headset
  Nitto Stem, Bars and Seatpost
  Polished H Plus Son Archtype rims on classic silver Novatech hubs – 32 spoke of course
  White Selle San Marco Regal saddle (I have a RegalE on my carbon roadie and love it)
  White bartape, hoods and cable housing

Thanks mate it's Columbus el-os. The frame alone is 1510g if I went with a carbon fork it could be around 400g lighter.

I’m not sure what brand the bolt is, it is just one they had in my local bike shop. I ordered the Record headset through Blackman’s Bicycles in Penrith as I wanted them to fit it for me. To do this they needed to clamp the frame in a work stand, but didn’t want to clamp on the paint. Instead they inserted a seat post and clamped to that.

So they spent 15 minutes rummaging through the workshop because they were sure they had the exact binder bolt I needed somewhere. The left side of the frame is already threaded so I only needed the bolt part. They charged me a couple of bucks to keep the bolt. I was very happy with their service to say the least.

Hi Team,
It has been some time since I have posted anything but I wanted to share this 2 star step through - garage sale for $25. I would love to know if she has all the orig. parts. mud guards are in the shed.... too lazy to strip them back. she was painted green all over even the rims so i decided to take her back to metal and just clear coat her except i undercoated the frame. frame is in great condition - no pitting! SN number is 00125 so not sure of age - any help on identifying the age and what is original is appreciated. also on the Malvern Star page

I just remembered to photograh two old bikes I just got for nothing from an aged customers shed before it fell down. (Really..I felt in danger walking into it)
I've stripped them for blasting today. The 24inch MS is I think a 1960 model almost complete but rusty.
The Hercules seems to be one of the 6 million they made before WW2. It was a 60's or 70's modified roadster (butterfly bars are a giveaway)
It has the nice old Brittania Works headbadge and Hercules chainwheel
