Spot Gen3
The promoted new features are:
New features Options:
Tracking motion-activated regardless of the level of tracking you choose (Basic, Unlimited or Extreme). A vibration sensor tells your SPOT to send track updates when you are moving and to stop when you do. This is a great new battery-saving feature!
Unlimited Tracking Set it and forget it. Pre-set your SPOT Gen3 to send tracks at the speed of your adventures. Change your tracks to send every 5, 10, 30, or 60 minutes. SPOT Gen3 will send tracks at your chosen rate for as long as your device is turned on and moving (no need to re-set after 24 hours). Tracking doesn't stop until you do.
Extreme Tracking Get all of the great features of Unlimited Tracking, but with the added ability to vary your track rate down to every 2 ½ minutes. D
Longer Battery Life SPOT Gen3 has approximately twice the battery life of the SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger!
Battery Options Now there are more options for how you power your SPOT:
4 AAA Energizer® Ultimate Lithium 8x Batteries (L92)
4 AAA Energizer® NiMH reusable batteries (NH12)
Line power with a 5v USB connection. (SPOT Gen3 is not waterproof when line powered.)

The Gen3 looks interesting but it's a bit expensive by the time you pay for this device and the ongoing annual fees. Still looks like a great little unit, in particular this latest version just released.
I'm considering, something similar to monitor my Bike, while I'm out and about, therefore if someone so happens to manage to pass my Kryponite Lock on my bike and rides off, I'll be allerted to this on my mobile phone and able to track my bike.
I'm looking at something like this.

He said what I said - you just can't beat it for a traveller's aid. I've been using mine for a month now and I'm delighted with it. As I write it is charging two iPads, an iPhone, a Magellan Cyclo and a Shimano Sports Cam. No sweat.Aushiker wrote:RonK and now myself are users of Anker's 5-Port 40W USB Charger. I assume that Andrew got his from King Power Accessories, same as I did.

Yes same place. I am thinking of getting a second one to leave at the office. Having the cameras on the bike and GPS to charge when I commute I see it as been an ideal solution.RonK wrote:I assume that Andrew got his from King Power Accessories, same as I did.

I now have one ex Japan. Very solid feel to it, charging my phone as I type. Seems to be quick with the charging. I got it from ebay seller, tokyofreaks23 for US$62.00.Aushiker wrote:The Anker Astro E5 15000 mAh looks like a reasonable compromise for me ... 10,500 to 12,000 mAh in reality which isn't to bad, two USB outputs at 1 amp and 2 amp and USB charging at 1.5 amp if going just for a battery.

That seller says he sells Japanese products but the Anker website I can't find that information.
With a 5V / 1.5A micro USB input, then ewerk with 5V 500mA output would be too slow to recharge? This would require a solar panel for off grid recharge?

Well, I dunno about cardio-control, but what I do like is that it's for a rear wheel and is both cassette and disc brake compatible.

It's been a long while between updates Phil - work commitments have curtailed my touring activities for a couple of years, but I have unfinished business in EnZed and I'll definitely be heading off again soon...TouringPhil wrote:Love your website RonK. I'm going to start reading now.
