to gumwall or not to gumwall

Postby paulos » Fri Aug 29, 2014 10:48 am

I need some guidance on whether to put gumwalls or plain black tyres on this 80's 10 speed i picked up. What would have been the go back in the day?

I think it depends on what you can get. locally the only 27" tyres are treaded indian stuff that cracks in less than 12 months.
when I see old 27's at the tip they may get bought just for the good cond. tyres I have 1 set of blak ribbed and 1 set of gumwall ribbed set aside for suitable resto's

i picked up a gumtree bike for a friend a few months ago and it had maxxis gumwalls on it, which i was almost tempted to nick. try your lbs, rather than ebay.

The local bike shop had a pair of gumwalls in stock (by accident apparently) $19 each,:: vee-rubber, they look pretty good. I've used their tubes in my motor bikes.
I was going to change the tyres tonight but i didnt check the tubes they sold me till i got home. They've given me schrader valves. Back i go tomorrow.

Gumwall EVERYTHING :) .

I see the deteriorating sidewalls as a good thing, it means if you want your money's worth from them you have to get off your backside and ride! I stick with Vee/Innova/Swallow tyres in 27", they are probably all out of the same factory in Indonesia. The last lot cost about $18 each, i usually get about 1,500kms of gravel riding out of them before they are completely bald. The only puncture i've had so far was from half a stubby bottle.

a pic of the bike would help decide. its a tough one, but anything 80's would have been gumwall wouldnt they?

Besides gumwall tyres often looking better on retro steeds, I like riding gumwalls as I can see from the saddle on the roll how much of a bulge is in the tyre when it's rolling. I like to see how much my tyre is working to keep my ride comfortable versus too much rolling resistance - it's much easier to observe the bulge on a gumwall compared to a blackwall tyre.

What is a thinner tyre, 27x 1 3/8 or 27x 1 1/4.
I am just finishing off a nice custom made bike from 1983 and it needs some gum walls , all I can find is World Tour 27 x 1 1/4 which I have on a town bike and come in at 31mm wide, to wide for this resto ,looking for something around 23 to 25mm width ( dont know the conversion to imperial ). Plus anyone know of an Aussie or UK supplier. Postage from USA seems to expensive. Any help would bee appreciated.

kids today!
1/4= 2/8

1 1/4" = 31.72mm
1 3/8" = 34.925mm

are you sure it is a 27" rim?

Okay , 27 x 1 1/8 was the size I was looking for after all, I think this will be the next size up from the 27 x 1 that are on the wheels at the moment ( but are fully black ).

I just checked, two Panaracer Pasela Tire[s] with Wire Bead, 27 x 1-1/8, with shipping to Australia is $US52.52 or about $A56. from Xtreme Bike & Sport
I was happy with them when I bought the tyres last year.

We can get cheap and cheerful 27 x 1 gum-walls. Can't remember what the brand is, probably Duro or Factor.

Not to everyone's taste but if you're doing a restoration on a budget they'll do the job.

Happy to do a special deal for forum members. Could do them for $20 per pair but you'd need to collect them from Sydney.

Cheers...

Skin wall tyres are where it's at. Black wall blend in and look bland. Just like black carbon bikes.
