I keep bending/snapping the tube core valves!

Postby rodneycc » Fri Aug 29, 2014 3:33 pm

Getting quite sick of this. Just bent and snapped the top off my second tube core valve in a couple of months. I'm trying to be careful with the head of the pump pushing straight down and straight back off but when I release it I seem to bent it somehow. Might be time to give this new floor pump away. Can you actually replace the core or is it a new tube job (I'm guessing the replacement core is the same price as a new tube anyway!).

No, in my experience most bike shops will give you a valve core or sell it to you for a token amount.

Don't think you can replace valve cores in most Presta tubes though.

most presta valve cores aren't removable, flats on the side of the core is a sign they should be however.

sounds like your pump, or at least it's head, is causing the problems.
if it's a floor pump, you can get a replacement head... most are universal fit as you can use a hose clamp or similar to re-attach it after removing/cutting off the old one.
for what it's worth, the head on my Topeak Joe Blow is great... and i believe can be bought separately.

Try and remove the wheel from the bike and loosen the valve stem retaining nut this way when you rock around with your little pump it moves the wheel with it instead of pulling against the stem . Most Schwalbe presta tubes have replaceable valves inserts.

Thanks guys, might just pull the trigger on one of those Joe Blows (was actually looking at those the other day anyway so thanks for the tip). Serves me right for buying a cheap Aldi Pump I guess. One of valves I broke didn't actually have a nut and the other one did.

Anyway see how I go. Thanks for all the advice as always.
cheers Rod.

check the valve head of the pump doesn't have one of those plastic inserts for the shrader valves that you need to reverse for presta. If the floor pump has a long flexible hose you shouldnt have to remove the wheel or loosen the stem I only do it for the little hand pumps without the hose.

Yeah its one of those dual head floor pumps with the Schroder hole on top and the prestia underneath (just below it).

Buy a replacement Lezyne hose and graft it to your pump. It screws on and off. Problem solved. Ask me how I know...

Thanks Shaun, thats a great idea. Was tossing between the Lezyne and the Topeak all night but just the hose and nozzel replacement on my pump sounds like the way to go. Shame I may have to pay $10-14 shipping!

Thinking I might actually go two, the Lezyne one as above and also the topeak smarthead hose replacement one as well that way I should have the best of both for less than a replacement pump.

I'm surprised no one has suggested a presta to schrader adapter. By using the adaptor the value won't bend or snap because its protected.

Just an update on this one for anyone who cares. I bought the lezyne replacement hose as well as the topeak smarthead replacement kit to replace the hose/head on my cheap bikemate pump. The winner was the topeak smarthead as it easily attached to the old pump with the same diameter hose. The lezyne hose was actually a smaller diameter hose/hole which was impossible to put the internal valve plug into without hollowing it out more (which was a complete pain and I still didn't get it completely right!).

So anyone trying up upgrade the cheap bikemate pump go yhe Topeak smarthead option. It will save you a lot of grief.

Cheers Rod

Sorry for the dumb question, where do you get the Lezyne spare parts? I don't get to the city much these days.

All the online sites had them, wiggle, chain reaction cycles. Even pushys and cycling express.

UK online mate, I wasn't in enough of a hurry to pay a premium.

I bought a Joe Blow. Worked like a charm until the seal in the head wore and would not hold on to smooth (no thread) tubes. So went to Aldi and bought a cheapo pump from them. Worked like a charm but would not pump my tubulars past 120psi. So took the head off the Aldi pump, put it on the Joe Blow and now can pump my tubulars up to 140psi easy. Put the worn Joe Blow head on the Aldi pump and use it when I only want about 90psi in the tyre. Such is life! :-)

you can buy the seals again and they are pretty cheap. http://www.this link is broken/topeak-joe-blow ... build-kit/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

although even when new, i do have issues getting a complete seal. Probably has something to do with trying to press and move that lever.

Tried tightening the cap to compress the rubber a bit?

I've got a topeak head on my old silca, works a treat.

Ive tried this but dont get a pressure reading through the adaptor. Is it me or is that how it is?

That's how it is, 'cos unless there's positive pressure in the system from the pump the valve will close & you won't get a reading.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
