Next Build - Chesini

Postby Typhoon Ken » Mon Aug 18, 2014 2:05 pm

I seen this and couldn't help myself. I think Campag Super Record (80s version) will be the go. Now the fun begins finding it all and hiding the receipts.

Always wanted to do a classic Colnago build but when I seen this I decided to be different. I love Colnagos and look at the ones on these pages longingly but I couldn't pass this by. It will get the royal treatment, I can already see the end result. Now the best bit begins, sourcing the rest of the bike.

Easier said than done I'm afraid. Here's mine, bought a couple of years ago and no progress since. The red cromovelato is every bit as gorgeous as the blue.

I've found it difficult and hideously expensive to source NOS components that will do it justice...

Wow a red Chesini frame and a blue one too. Beautiful frames both.

I like your resolve Typhoon Ken to give it the royal treatment, I think a beautiful frame such as yours deserves the best and Super Record would be perfect.

A fantastic Colnago bike would be lovely but this Chesini will be something special.

G'day Ron,

Yes I agree that NOS is very expensive and in some cases insanely cost prohibitive, I seen a set of NOS Super Record Brakes and Calipers for $850 US. A point to remember is that it is only NOS while sitting in the box, once fitted and used it is then "used". I'm only just starting the search but there is a fair bit of "Mint" and "Very Good" used parts around and with a little elbow grease and effort these parts will come up as good as new and for a half to a third of the price of NOS. There will still be a few items that I may go new on but I will work around it if I can without sacrificing build quality.

This is addictive as you all know, the thrill of the hunt, the planning, the build itself. No wonder we get in trouble for starting a new project so soon after finishing the last.

Now the wait begins, everything has been sourced and is either here or inbound. A mix of about 70% NOS and 30% lightly used. I had Velo Base open in one window while searching in another so I could get it as close to correct as possible. The only thing that is a little younger is the C Record Seat Post. As you will see I have got a bit of a red and white thing going on as well as all Italian. So the parts list goes like this:

Chesini Precision 56 cm Columbus SL 1983
Headset – Cambio Rino Chesini Pantographed
Stem – Cinelli 1R Milled Fluting “Italian Colours”
Handlebars – Ambrosio Volte Del Mondo Champione
Brake Levers – Campagnolo Super Record White Hoods
Bar End Caps – Campagnolo branded
Bar Tape – Cinelli White Cork
Brake Calipers – Campagnolo Super Record
Brake Cables – White
Bottom Bracket – Campagnolo Super Record
Crank Set – Campagnolo Super Record
Chain Rings – Cambio Rino Red Anodised 53/42
Chain – Regina Extra
Pedals - Campagnolo Super Record
Toe Clips - Campagnolo Super Record, Cinelli Alferdo Binda White Toe Straps
Freewheel – Regina Extra Oro 13-22 6 Speed
Front Derailleur – Campagnolo Super Record
Rear Derailleur – Campagnolo Super Record
Shifters - Campagnolo Super Record
Hubs - Campagnolo Super Record 36h
Rims – Ambrosio Balance Clincher 36h Red
Tyres – Veloflex Master
Bottle and Cage – Cobra Profil Aero
Seat Post - Campagnolo C Record
Binder Bolt – Campagnolo
Saddle – Iscaselle Record White

Yep - maybe I've been too fussy in my parts hunt, but that lot would have cost more than I paid for the frame.

Did you get the bottom bracket cable guide with the frame?

Also you don't mention it but you'll need one of these for the rear derailleur if you don't already have one.

Can you give us a rough budget for this little lot? I'm really impressed you found everything so fast.

It is a little world we live in now thanks to the internet. If you have the time, or no life, you can hunt down just about anything now. So what would take years of swap meets or word of mouth now can be done very quickly. BTW not all came from ebay. Unfortunately the world is really small to contact and buy from but still huge to ship from so cost is most likely made up of 2 parts goods and 1 part shipping. Oh to be living in Europe and building a bike.

This may sound stupid but I haven't got the calculator out yet for total cost, it scares me to do so, kind of what I don't know won't be able to be extracted under torture by the partner. I'll do a quick calc and get back to you.

Shipping out of Europe and the UK is ok. It's the US sellers that are forced to use that crap Pitney Bowes postage handler that are super expensive. They seem to be clueless to how much it is effecting their final auction price from international bidders.

Congratulations, priceless!

I can’t wait for the build. Take your time.

Do you plan for it to be a rider?

And never, never, never show the missus the spreadsheet.

This does look promising. Please use it though. Nothing sadder then a bike that's not ridden.
