G'day all, hope nobody minds this thread going here instead of in the shop forum, but I'm hoping to benefit from some specialist MTB advice
I'm looking to get back onto the mtb after a couple of years of it gathering dust - it's just a waste to live in Tassie and only ride on-road
My much-abused Avanti Ventura hardtail needs at least a new chain, cassette, crankset and bottom bracket and possibly rear derailleur. I figure I can pick up low-end Shimano or generic bits for under $200 if the RD is ok, or $300 if not.
The bike is an Avanti Ventura 'comp series' (whatever that means); 6061 alloy frame and forks are Suntour M8040. The existing/original group is mostly Acera(RD M330, FD C101, Acera 7-speed shifters). It seems reasonably light to me, but then all my other bikes have been steel frames.
Question is; is it worth doing? I'm planning on a new mtb eventually; but if I can get away with the current bike for 12 months or so, it would make my cash-flow situation easier. I need a new road bike as well, which will take priority since I ride it every day </sacrilege>. I'm planning on a gentle re-introduction to off-road cycling; some cross-country riding and possibly a bit of single-trail but nothing too difficult - so I reckon the current frame and forks should be ok.
What do the experts reckon - worth spending a few bucks on, or should I stick to the road until I can afford an upgrade?
Avanti Ventura - worth repairing?

Really only you can make this call M@, in your shoes, I'd prolly hunt out an ebay unit to cannibalise.

...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.
