S5 rear light

Postby warthog1 » Thu Jan 09, 2014 5:33 pm

Decided to try a moon comet from Cell bikes as I've never been happy with the fizik clip light I've been using. I can't use the fizik light with a saddle bag attached anyway.

The light is pretty bright and seems user friendly, pretty happy at this stage. :)

Love my lights,

But the S5 is not light mount friendly, mount my lights on the saddle bag, backpack and helent. Yes three light facing rear!

Motorist apear to be bicycle blind, hopefully multiple flashing lights may catch their eye and make a difference.

Have you tried the Numen Aero Rear Light which was designed for Giant? they fit well on the aero seatpost/frames.

I have one on my Propel SL, and don't believe there are any brandings on the light itself so it should look great on the S5.

I bought one of these just to check it out... Mounts well but I wouldn't use it as a main light... Way too dull to put my life in its hands... Although I home brewed up a secure mount for around the aero seatpost, I know just just a helmet mounted light as my primary light. After trialing the RedZone 8 I don't need anything else except a backup in my pocket in case of failures...

Serfas utl-6 now. Similar brightness to the moon comet, longer run time and hangs on better.

Just a heads up... Racewaredirect is about to release 3D printed light mounts for the Cervelo aero seatpost... Long overdue that someone would make an elegant, reliable , mount...

Cheers, will do that. Also found a Garmin VIRB mount for the S5 Post. although I have a saddle rail mount for that already. No saddle bag going on the S5 :-)

Been looking at this over the weekend, and think I found my solution, which is rather elegant and does not involve 3D printing or permanent attachment of anything to the post

https://sugru.com/guides/mount-a-see-se ... bike-frame

Doesn't need to be that particular light - just any light with a silicone strap system, with the Sugru providing the perfect mould that stays bonded to the light.

Cool. Step 8 sounds a bit wrong out of context :-)

I tried the Moon Comet but found the saddle rail on my S5 is too wide for the bracket due to the saddle position. The saddle mount on top of the post prevents the bracket from moving back far enough.
So, the comet will go on the commuter bike.
I got a Moon LX-70 as an alternate and it comes with rubber pads to fit aero posts. did a quick test and it looks like an almost perfect match. Will post up some pics as soon as I have put the aero pad onto the light (you need to unscrew the default pad and swap it over with one of the two others). If the fit is a bit wobbly, I will get some Sugru to make it a perfect fit.

Pretty nice fit with the LX70 light. No extra mucking about required.
