Yep, you'd swear some people were just waiting for him to fail so that they could have a crack. While it's true that Porte hasn't proven his GT bonafides I don't believe that what has happened in the last two weeks definitively rules him out as a leader in the future. He has genuinely had bad luck and this is clearly not Sky's A team when it comes to GT's. Granted he isn't getting any younger so the time to prove himself is running out but he is still worth a punt for a team like OGE. Races like Paris-Nice and Tirreno are not to be dismissed lightly, they have their own prestige, should Richie not ever come up to the mark in GT's. As SSScott alluded to I think that the ITT ride was that of a dispirited rider and not anything to do with a lack of quality in the discipline.

There is a rider who fell on the not so soft black top and dislocated his shoulder, but he didn't give up. Rode the Giro's longest and toughest stages in pain, but he made no excuses and didn't give up.
Then he fell on the not so soft black top again, but again he didn't give up. Now he's leading the race. And if his "luck" continues in the same way he can't possibly win. But I'll bet he doesn't give up while he can still get on his bike.

Hey, I played union at school And I certainly don't look like a gorilla. There's a few guys on here that have played football in the past.

I am standing by a rugby at the moment watching my not so little Aussie / kiwi / French / Spanish hybrid kick arse ... And I still look like I should be a number 8 instead of a"cyclist"

Very, very different games, Thecaptn - historically products of the English class system.

Ie Union = thug's game played by gentlemen, League=gentlemen's game played by thugs.

Sadly, the carnival is over for Richie - his heart is clearly not in it now. I cannot be critical, as he has had some poor outcomes - both within and outside his control. Does anyone see him finishing the Giro, or will he abandon and get prepared for the TdF?

So, my initial fear that he wasn't yet up to a three-week tour appears to be supported by this outcome - at this time.

One thing I must ask of those who are more knowledgeable than I am; do people think Sky management gave 100% commitment to the Giro, ie, did they send a team that was up to the standard required to give it a proper tilt? I do note the absence of a number of riders who I know will be in the TdF team - so have to ask the question....

A bit harsh maybe, but Porte has never been in the bridal party - his best result in a grand tour is 7th & white jersey in the Giro in 2010. He has some great wins in shorter stage races, Paris–Nice in 2013 then this year in Paris–Nice, Volta a Catalunya & Giro del Trentino. He just doesn't appear to be able to hold it together for a 3 week tour.
