Ideal Wheel and tyres for touring?

Hey all!
Just wanted to hear peoples thoughts on what kinds of wheels an tyre's they prefer for their bikes?

Well i prefer to have strong wheels double wall and eyeleted 38 more flat spokes in a 700 size. Tires i like to use well long as they fit the rim and have a bit of rubber eg: 40c/43c. I wont name brands because there are to many but i do like Continental tires and for rims i like Vortex i think thats what they are called i had them for so long.... :D :D

I tour on 700 X 38C tyres with wheels that have 36 spokes.

However I have just located a 26 inch wheel with 128 spokes :shock: :D

G'day

It seems most tourers on the market here come with 700C x 32. Is this considered too narrow?

No. It's a personal thing for me. My tourer came with the 700x38c tyres and I've just kept them that size. I also find that with the wider tyres on an aluminium frame, the ride is smoother and the bike is more stable when loaded.

Loaded touring? Balloon tyres are cool. 8) Eg. Schwalbe "Big Apple", Endomorph? Maybe a little too far.

Strong straight guage spokes 3x laced, 36 hole rim, make a very, very strong wheel. With the balloon tyres the whole wheel will be near invincible. Rolling resistance will be low and ride will be smooooooth! (I can just feel it now, beautiful.)

For 700c wheels I'd be using velocity Dyad with 14/15 DB spokes built up to some nice White industries hubs.
If you're a Clydesdale then go for Phil Wood.
If you like adjusting cup and cone bearings then go for XT or XTR.
We have done 11,500 on our 26" DeepV rims which are laced to Hugi hubs. The Hugi have been faultless (unlike the older model) but not very easy to get.
The front rim is worn enough to be replaced so as I still can't get hold of 40h DeepV's, I'm rebuilding the wheels with Velocity Aeroheat Rims. These are the same cross section as the Dyad.
