Ride comparisons

Postby tuco » Sat Mar 31, 2007 10:23 am

Looks like I've got my training sorted out.

I found another group who cruise around at about 33-35km/h. I went with them today for 30km so I could compare the results with my 30km A/B grade training rides which are much higher speeds.

Both rides are 30km and take 1 hour so an average of 30km/h for both.
A/B grade ride : (It's longer than 30km but I take short cuts to catch up so I only do 30km)
Time : 60 min
Ave HR : 155
Max HR : 180
Calories : 895
Ave speed : 30km/h
Max speed : 49km/h
Time in Fat burning/Aerobic zone : 18 minutes

New more casual 30km ride :
Time : 60 min
Ave HR : 137
Max HR : 160
Calories : 666 (scarey )
Ave speed : 30km/h
Max speed : 46km/h
Time in Fat burning/Aerobic zone : 48 minutes

I don't really pay much attention to the max speed because sometimes that can only be for 10-15 seconds when catching back up to the pack.

The interesting stats are the lower heart rates and calories used for the same average speed and the massive difference in the time in the fat burning/aerobic zone.

I'm thinking two of the easy 30km rides and two of the harder 30km rides per week should be a good mix for weight loss/aerobic and stamina/strength building. I do a bit of running up and down bush tracks which also adds to the stamina/strength building.

I walked up the hill last night along the road instead of the bush tracks and it truly was a waste of time. 20 min up with an ave HR of 118 and 20 min down with an ave HR of 105. I'll have to stick to the bush tracks runs, at least I know I've exercised after a trek on them.

Hills? What are hills? Townsville is flat except for this 285m high hill which is the bush tracks we run up and down. The one in the back ground is about 685m but you won't catch me riding up that!

To answer your question there not hilly at all.

Your figures show the same distance and average speed and there's no hills on the rides, then what is the difference? Is there a much greater variation in speed within the fast ride over the other ride?

The A/B grade ride speed along at 43km/h then drop to around 30km/m after 10-12 km. They hold about 30km/h for about 8km then they speed up again and that's where I drop off the back and limp along at about 27-28km/h hence the average of 30km/h even after the early 43 km/h pace.

The easier 30km ride is at a steady 33-35km/h the entire ride so it's much easier with a lower heart rate.

Yes Seddo, that's Mt Stuart in the background. The foreground of Castle Hill..
