Tour Down Under '16

Postby GAV!N » Sun Jan 17, 2016 5:34 pm

Just starting a thread for the purpose of whinging that of course, there is no live coverage of tonight's 'People's Choice' stage/crit. F****** lousy. I don't know who's 'choice' it is to not have it televised.

There's no coverage of the women's tour either.

I'm flying down on Wed to get some riding and spectating in, and will be up on Wilunga on Saturday.

I'm riding the BUPA stage 4 challenge with the Jens Voigt Team, so should be a bit of fun (I hope). I'm not usually that keen on big rides like this, but it was a gift.

There's streaming

http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/2016/01/15/1 ... ive-stream" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I find http://www.steephill.tv/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is pretty good at finding live streams of cycling.

Commercial stations grab the rights so they can control the broadcast so as not to disrupt their normal programming/ratings - hence 'highlights' late at night. Was the same for RoadNats, except for Sunday.

Whinge number 2 from me re: Channel 9. I worked yesterday and couldn't be bothered staying up watch the highlights due to them being on at nearly midnight, so I recorded it. Well done channel 9 in again f****** up your programming and having your stupid US sitcom overrun by 25 minutes, leaving my recorded highlights package to cut out at 50km to go. Well done, well done indeed. Would never happen on SBS.

yep, was up last night with restless kids, got to 11pm and thought I'd check out the highlights. 20 minutes later and no highlights i gave up and went to bed. very disappointed.

At least the police motorcyclist didn't push the rider off his bike.

It might be an idea to record the live broadcast.

Out to watch the race today. Saw a police officer on road closure duties finish his water then throw the empty bottle over the fence into the Mt Bold reserve. After the bikes went past we retrieved the bottle then took it over to police officer who remained on the corner and informed him. He asked me if I wanted to lodge a complaint. I said no, just let the rest of the officers know not to do it again.

Some pictures from today.

You'd never not back Gerrans in a small group sprint. Great finish but the ride for me was Michael Woods. It lit the climb up and still came in third. Not bad for a rookie.

Yep another masterclass today.

One small thing I've observed from watching the live feed (which I think is done pretty well by Channel 9; Robbie Mc again shows how to translate his vast experience into informative, interesting on air commentary) is the number of badly parked cars on the course. Too close to the riders and I even noticed the peloton funnelled down to one lane as traffic had been stopped on their side as they came off the last climb. There was also the trailer jutting out on the road as a driver had driven onto the Stirling course! I wonder if locals just don't realise the space required for a fast, wide peleton or are authorities a bit lax? Matter of time before a rider, like Cav did clipping a side mirror in the TOB or worse.

Orica are just on fire! Gives me goosebumps seeing Jay doing so well; I remember seeing him at Muzza a few months back just tearing the field apart. These guys are another level.

Is it just the BMC kit or is Porte ridiculously small this year?

Seems I was right, when I said that I thought Bobridge had burnt a lot of matches in his Aus Title win. Haven't seen to much of him in the race. :(

Pretty poor field this year. Almost not worthy of World Tour status.

I dont see how its a poor field?
You've got Orica's A team (alba, impey, durbridge, hayman, hepburn) with Gerrans.
Dennis Rohan, Richie Porte (TDF yellow jersey and potential TDF GC contender for BMC.
Gman, Henao, Kennaugh, Stannard, Rowe for SKY.
Hansen (13 Grand Tours), De Gent, Greg Henderson for Lotto Soudal.
Arredondo, van poppel, stetina and heshedal for Trek.
Pozzovivo, riblon, gougeard for AG2r.
Boom, Westra, Sanches for Astana.
Machado, Belkov and taramae for Katusha
and so on.. long list
