I am up to 14th by about 300 metres

had a good start to the year, in terms of mileage.
but my total commuting miles will be dropping this year.

i did 8000 kms last year but found myself still struggling with hills at the end of it.
so this year i'll cut down on some of my longer commuting routes and concentrate on hill repeats instead.

also ramping up the weekend group rides which means cutting down on commuting miles (as recovery rides instead).

similar to last year, 7-12th are very close

I wouldn't bank on it - I ended up in p1 more by luck than judgement and have enjoyed it for a bit, but my weekly distance will start to drop soon as work commitments begin to ramp up and curtail my opportunities for extending the morning commute.

Mid March? Someone's going to Three Peaks! Don't blame you for keeping the commutes shortish.

Not that I own one, but does riding an e-bike count or are they against the rules? Just toying with the idea of getting one to mix things up with the regular roadie...

I think it depends on your reasons for commuting; I commute because it's better for the environment, and my fitness (it's not faster for me, nor cheaper). If I was to ride an e-bike then it is not fulfilling my reasons for commuting, therefore not a real commute (sure an e-bike is better than a car for the environment and fitness, but still not as good a good old fashioned leg powered bike). If however you're commuting to avoid/reduce congestion, or to save money on fuel/parking/tolls then taking an ebike is going to meet these criteria.
If everyone else is using 100% body parts, and one person is using 20% battery, 80% parts it does seem a little less "level playing field".
At the end of the day, I see this challenge as a means of getting me on the bike on those days that I would normally pike, and the fact that someone is riding an e-bike isn't going to change that. Actually, if using an e-bike means that jools will use the car less often, then surely that's a good thing.
I can't decide, so my answer is a fence sitting maybe

The extended commute is enough of a slippery slope imo....I rode back from Rye the other night, but didn't count that as I don't think it's totally within the spirit of the game (I will count the return trip to get the ute, maybe) and skews things. I did the return almost 30 times last year and would have added 7,000 k's just with that (if I didn't crack the sads with garmin ) but that's self regulatory. (I determine where and when I work, so it's too easy to claim).

I'm on the fence, but if Jools is a low k local commuter, or has health issues then I say it's ok.

e.g. everyone complained at my suggestion of including the commute I did in Adelaide from Victor Harbor to Flagstaff Hill (via Mt Lofty). I haven't included it, because as f&o says, it's not in the spirit of it.

Jools is currently in P19 (only ahead of the not-yet-started cancan). So I'm going to say yes to get Jools motivated.

Thinking about it, perhaps my real concern is someone taking it all to seriously by getting an e-bike in order to "win" the challenge. I say yes but they only get half the sheep station

in ~6 weeks jools has done 120kms. if we extrapolate that out to a year, he won't take the sheep station even if you quadruple it

One other thing....unlikely but...

If Jools (or anyone else) is a reformed smoker fighter the cravings by riding them out, then I say it counts, even on an e-bike (unless you're still smoking ).

I understand the tough call as it is helping "power" more kms- but to me that is the point lets get more people on bikes. So if Jools wants to have an easy day with an E-bike great its still riding.
I view it the same as me riding the folding bike to swimming when soccer training was on so I put it easily in the boot - it is mach harder to ride than my regular commuter but that doesn't mean I claim extra kms. I did this many.

Jools if you find a good E-Bike please let me know - I might need it when my ex-fast bowler knees, back, shoulders, ankles, etc.... give up.

You should claim double one person pedaling - two people transported sounds OK to me.

Now where was that website again that will build me a rickshaw to take kids to school

(Hmmmmmmmm - 3 kids x 13km each way = 78km/day or 15600 per year )
