soft tyre

Postby winona_rider » Wed Nov 05, 2008 8:07 pm

My front tyre has done about 4000 ks. it's a continental GP4000.
even though it's done so many Ks - it's tread is still pretty real and the two tread-wear indicators are still very visable. Plus I am 70 kilos or less.

YET! I pump it up to 120psi and it still feels spongey when I squeeze it with my fingers. and when i ride it feels and IS flat. i hear and feel the wheel get knocked on decent sized bumps. it sucks.

is my bike pump giving me a false reading?
i know intuitively it's time to change the tyre - but I can't help thinking there's life in this tyre!

help!

Ok, 4000 kays should only effect the tread, and maybe the integrity of the tyre to a small degree, but not like your describing.

One dumb question - is your pressure gauge accurate?

If the tyre feels flat and IS flat, then maybe you haven't got 120 p.s.i like you think. Try another gauge or pump.

Regardless of how "strong" your tyre is, 120 p.s.i should make the thing feel like steel, not squirmy or soft.

Kev.

could the valve be faulty?
like give a false reading. cause the pump reads fine on other tyres.

Shouldn't be a faulty valve.

Try deflating it completely and re-inflating it. If it still feels soft, put a new tube in it and HTFU. :D

Graeme
