Bates bike

Postby tex004 » Fri Dec 02, 2016 10:52 am

Hi, I have I bates frame with horizontal drop outs. It has r66 stamped on bottom of bb. Does anyone have some info about this frame and what parts would keep it's originality. Appreciate any info.
Thanks Terry

This is a C1968 ish Malvern star Roadstar or Skidstar frame, with a repaint by Bates at some later time. If you look inside the head tube of the frame, you may see some evidence of 2 little holes, where a plastic star was attached originally. The vertical frame number on the right hand rear fork end, and the stars in the fork crown, are dead giveaways.

Sorry to chime in late, If it helps believe this is at least built by Bates of Coburg, though could still be a malvern star as believe they were an agent. It has the same "R" type stamp that my 1968/69 Bates has and matches another Bates of Coburg track frame i have seen.

Yes, Bates would have put their R66 stamp on it when they repainted it. Probably has the same R66 stamp on the steerer tube of the fork, so they didn't get them mixed up during the painting process. You may even find that the R stands for Reno or Repaint.
