TonyMarx, it was a good suggestion to register this with the authorities.

Until the authorities report, I am concerned about speculation and feel that it is wiser and more compassionate to wait on the report.

I know the place too. It is nice to see that people care. If I'm going through there, I will probably stop for a minute or two.

In relation to the comments on the subject of limiting riding time and designating a daily finish time of 9pm, I note that in Mike's video blog summing up the Australian leg of his round-the-world race, he says that people on teh east coast gave him much more room at night (perhaps becasue they didn't know what he was) than during the day, when they'd close pass at up to 120km/hr with an empty lane beside them

That says a couple of things to me:
1: the issue of rider safety is not as simple as managing rider fatigue
2: Australian attitudes to cyclists - just, wow. And not in a good way.

Of course, we all live #2 every day, but to hear it come from him, with his reputation and palmares, with his experience of cycling worldwide, posthumously, I'm just so angry and sad. This has to stop.

This week I will write up all my recent near misses that I have collected video and measurement evidence on, as well as a near-dooring, and send them in. My motivation has been lagging due to the friction encountered, but now it takes on a new importance.

RIP Mike Hall.

I've just received a call from the crash investigation team, he has quite a number of witnesses, said he will need to get a statement from me at some stage.

I guess unless anyone else was in the vicinity at the time the one with the most knowledge is the poor driver of the vehicle involved.

I did mention to the constable that the shoulder of the road is virtually non existent for quite a distance just prior to the pole where the flowers have been placed. While I don't know the exact location of the collision if Mike had white line fever and was keeping it on his right he would have ended up in the rough just before where the collision may have occurred :(.

I have heard on the grapevine that the driver has been charged.

That's a beautiful photo TonyMax.

I feel as though he is still out there riding, like he always did, forever.
He revelled in the pain and the suffering and the adventure, and ultimately the joy and relief.

Ride on, Mike.

Anyone still following the riders continuing on the route? There's still 10 or so battling on to Sydney, hopefully they get the same great support on offer in the first two weeks. Lochie should be in Melbourne early next week, what a champ!

I'm still checking them out each day. Lochie is doing great considering his couple of prangs and no front teeth !
Shows what a young body can do on little training or prior experience. :)

Is there any way to tell which are still moving and which have pulled out completely? Those who haven't moved for 4 hours this morning might just be having a sleep/breakfast? It looks like one guy is on the Hume cutting out Cooma, but there are a few in Adaminaby and another couple headed my way who are on the move.

If you check during the day it's probably safe to say greyed it people are out, just check the timestamps to be sure.

You can play around with the filters on the bottom left of the page, below the name list. For example, apart from the origin country, I only have the "no tracking' and "in progress" check boxes ticket. I stretch the 'in progress time out to 12 hours and that seems to capture everyone.

OK it looks like Crutchy and Andy Buchs are on the move down around my way and they will both approach Canberra today or over the weekend.

I gave Andy a clap and a cheer, I passed him at Colinton on the way home. Crutchy was already through Tuggeranong before I finished work.

For those interested, ABC News has an article on what it is like to "witness" a death via a dot on Google Maps.

THanks for that. I've got a lot of respect for Juliana as a cyclist and communicator.

Lochie Kavanagh, the 18 year old who has been riding for about 5 months, finished the ride yesterday. He's a nephew of a good mate of mine, and was with us at 3 peaks about 5 weeks ago.

This kid is going to do great things. I'm totally in awe of what he did.

His twitter feed is a bit raw but we get what he's about. hard core for sure!

Rumours are never a good thing, however I'm hearing rumours that the driver in the Mike Hall incident has been charged - has anyone else heard any updates on the case?

I haven't heard anything, nor have I been contacted again by the police to make an official statement. There are no media releases regarding this incident on the AFP national or ACT local websites.

I guess it might satisfy some people's desires if the driver was charged, but it won't do anything for me. I feel for him or her, even if the driver is deemed to be "at fault" I doubt they left home that morning intending to run down a cyclist.
