Bike weight in the steel realm.

Postby brauluver » Fri Nov 21, 2008 5:17 pm

After reading the Reynolds thread and seeing weight mentioned I've become curious as to what sort of weights these vintage steel framed bikes range in.

I have recently transferred all my bits to the bennett mystery tange frame, that I suspect may be a Cro Mo triangle only, and It weighs in at a modest 10 kg or 22lb.I consider this to be light and takes my total ride weight up to 80 kg.

In this post on bike forum http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php? ... stcount=21 is a list of late 80's bike weights as a comparo.

Weights of 1988 and 1989 Road Bikes:

"High End" Road Bikes"

Bianchi Giro $1,250 - Columbus SLX/SPX - weight: 22 pounds

Mercian King of America $1,600 - Reynolds 531 - weight: 21 pounds

Cinelli Athena $1,500 - Columbus Cromor - weight: 22.5 pounds

Centurion Prestige $1,000 - Tange Prestige - weight: 21 pounds

Specialized Allez Epic $1,800 - Carbon Fiber - weight: 20.9 pounds

Tesch 101 $1,900 - True Temper RC - weight: 21.5 pounds

In 1989 and 1988, the "expensive" bikes were coming in with weights of 21 to 22 pounds, using "high end" components, light wheels and tires.

"Mid-Priced Road Bikes"

Panasonic DX-6000 $730 - Tange #1 - weight 21.5 pounds

Terry Chrom $750 - Tange #1 - weight 22.5 pounds

Centurion Ironman Master $750 - Tange #1 - weight 22.5 pounds

All seem to be in the 9/10 kg range.

So who here has any weights recorded for comparo, either bare frame or complete road going for interests sake?

All those bikes in the Repco thread would be an interesting comparo on their own.

I weighted my Moser frame when I striped it and it was 2050 gr. did not weight it with its components back on yet. It is made of Matrix tubes (that was in the mid eighties, way before the movie).

My cecil Walker 1978 531db weighs 10kg, this is with

- 36 hole Mavic Open Pro Rims, Ultegra Hubs & GP4000s tyres
- Cinelli bar, stem

Cuuld likely get it lighter if I went lighter rims and seat but suits me as i weigh wrong side of 100k so a few grams nt an issue

Probaly an emotive topic but hell lets rock the boat why buy a 10K carbon bike for sake of 500 ~ 1000 grams. we could all probably afford to loose this weight(some like me alot more).

Lets all bankrumpt ourselves for the best bike to gain a weight advantage whilst pi5s and pizza on friday is the norm

I have a couiple of Peugeot Avoriaz's with Carbolite plus tubing that come in at 10.4 and 10.5 KG, A Carlton Corsair in Reynolds 501 at 12.1 KG, A Raleigh Pro race in 501 at 11.4KG, A Motobecane in Vitus 888 at 10.9KG, A peugeot SV10 with Super Vitus 980 at 9.8KG and a Raleigh Grand prix with 1020 tubing at 12.5kg.

All of these are real weights of the complete bikes with pretty much complete period components including pedals clips and straps etc. If you were to say substitute a complete modern say 105 groupset you could probably trim up to a kilo of these weights.

I ride the old steel frame bikes because I like them and grew up with them ( still only ride friction shifters ) and the quality of the road feel of steel frame is enjoyable. Steel frames also do last really well with a life almost as long as the rider will need.

The Moser was weighted today at 10.1 kg, could probably scraped a couple hundred grams with the fir/campa wheel set instead of the aksium one, but if I was fussy about it wouldn't I get a carbon fibre frame? and get on some sort of diet
It is a 57cm x 57 cm with a current campa veloce group set.

amazing all this really.....isn't it?

There is a MASSIVE difference in component specs here, many not retro mind you, and yet the weight difference is so minimal that a half bottle of water can tip the scales totally!

My 501SL as now pictured runs about 10.9kg (23lbs, bathroom scales so some margin for variation).

Tange Infinity bare frame with forks and headset: 2.9kg (on the bathroom scales, so give or take 100g).

No argument there.

I never understand when people choose the bike with the carbon frame over the one with the decent groupset and wheels.
I ride, therefore I am. But don't ride into harm's way.

i'm glad i asked the question now,as I've always been curious as to how a good ol steely stacks up by todays ridiculous weeny standards.
10kg and under has always felt like a lightweight bike to me.

I wonder what the weight difference of six more rear gears, a second chainring, front and rear derailleurs and bifters is
