It did have black originally but it also had a black saddle back then.

Magnificent bike Peter. Anquetil as well as being the world's best Time Trialler of his era also rode track ...as in his famous Six-Day win in 1957 and 1958 at the the six days of Paris. Perhaps this was the bike he rode?
I would probably go a brown leather same colour as the Brooks Swallow ... that would be period correct as well as looking good in my opinion.

Red, white and blue harlequin tape is the only sensible option.

Its awesome. I've got in on my XACD Ti Bike. Looks like leather but half the price and a really nice feel.

I prefer shellacked cotton tape over leather.
I use shellacked white cotton tape on my bikes. 3-4 coats and it comes out the same colour as my honey Brooks Pro and B17 barrow.
Shellacked purple cotton tape perfectly matches the darker antique brown of my B17 narrow.
