Hi All,
A friend of mine is just about to sell his Giant Defy Disc 1 (2016 model), it is a M/L size. I have the chance to buy it at quite a good price however without riding it, thought id ask if I should even bother, given that I'm 5'9" tall.

Would be great if someone was able to explain how you work what bike size to go for without actually sitting on the bike Appreciate, however, that actually test riding may be the best option. Plan is to do this at some point over the next week.
From a very brief google, the bike has received many good reviews with no issues. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
Cheers,
Rob
Will this bike fit me??

It's likely too big for you. Giant recommends M/L for a height of 178-183cm and M for 173-178cm.

Agree with biker. Im 5'9 and ride 55cm bikes. M=54.5 and M/L=56
But it might be worth trying it out. Its close to being okay.
With the sloping top tube the seat height wont be a problem.
A 1 cm shorter stem may do the job. Try it.

It will probably just fit, but might not feel right.
I'm your size and ride M in the Giant frames.

Yes technically it's a bit big but as Derney says the seat height will be fine and $30 on a shorter stem is nothing if you can get it a good price

It also depends a bit on your body proportions. I am short of leg, so can fit a larger frame than most my size because I have a longer reach. Sloping top tubes make this easier because there is more saddle adjustment. If you happened to have long legs, and therefore shorter reach, you might struggle on a larger frame because it is more difficult to shorten the reach to the bars than it is to raise a saddle.
Throw a leg over and see how it fits, you might be lucky.
