Wheelset Advice - Kona Rove ST Alex CXD7 upgrade

Postby DewNoob » Wed Oct 25, 2017 8:50 pm

Hi

I'm after some wheelset advice - I'm currently riding a 2014 Kona Rove ST (http://2014.konaworld.com/rove.cfm) as my day-to-day commuter, 25kms one way - mix of gravel, bike path and road. While it handles the gravel and bike path with graceful aplomb as expected, it's more than a little sluggish on the road, particularly climbs. I'm therefore looking at upgrading the wheelset - while not breaking the bank.

Current tyres are Freedom Ryder 35s - which I'll swap out for some Conti Gatorskin 32s
Current wheelset is Alex CXD7 - hard to find much info on this, but one poster (http://forums.mtbr.com/cyclocross/alexr ... 15187.html) has mentioned they tip well over the 2kg mark (for the whole wheelset).

As far as I can tell, the Rove needs quick release, 6 bolt, disc, SRAM-compatible wheels (10 speed).

I'm looking at something along the lines of Mavic Aksium's https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mavic-Aksiu ... SwlMFZNXeS or these Fulcrum's - https://www.probikekit.com.au/bicycle-w ... 34077.html

Can someone tell me a) if I've got the right spec'd wheel and b) whether I'll see a weight and performance improvement compared with the Alex rims on currently?

The type of disc brake mounting (6-bolt or centrelock) doesn't really matter unless you have multiple wheelsets and want to be able to have fewer spare brake rotors on hand. If you are replacing your existing wheelset entirely, then you are free to choose whether you want to use 6-bolt or centrelock.
