Road bike under $1000

Hi guys,

I'm looking at getting a cheap "winter bike" to ride to work in bad weather and save my good bike for sunny days, and also chuck a pannier rack on for when I need to take stuff to work.

I've been looking at something like the Giant Contend 1 or Trek 1.1 are there any other options that may be better?

It'd be worth giving Cell Bikes a look-in.
I bought a complete 11 speed 105 equipped Lapa 3.0 for under $1000. Half decent Alex rims on cup and cone Joytech hubs too.
Delivered to my door. It rides surprisingly well.
The Lapa is intended for trainer and dirty weather use.
Unfortunately they're all out of stock but there are other similar bikes.

A value for money brand is a Polygon. Alternatively if you are fairly confident with your knowledge of bikes, the best value is from a great second-hand bike that the owner can't sell. Obviously the criteria is the mounts for the bike rack.

I'm with this guy, have seen a Polygon in the flesh, was surprised at the apparent quality, looked very "Merida-like" if that makes sense. The one I saw had a Tiagra set on it, seemed nifty. Another option may be this Fuji :

Won't be putting a rear rack or guards on that, and I also think he's asking a bit much for a 6yo Defy.

$800 for a 6 year old bike without wheels.

It has 105 which is fine and looks to be in good condition but essentially with wheels it it $1600 and the wheelset prices are over the top.

The issue is that tou can get a new bike with 105 (and wheels) and a shop warranty for a few dollars more... and maybe as a bargain for $1600 (last years model).

Second the cell or polygon options, also as they're not seen as desirable brands, might make your bike safer when left at work.

Not sure if you'll scrape in under $1000 with a build, but I very much like the Kinesis T3 frame and fork. It is a winter training bike.

It will weigh the same as most bikes around the $1000 mark, so nothing special. It's good if you've got any custom requirements like a 1x11 gear train or something like that. It needs a lot of preparation before building unfortunately (facing and chasing bottom bracket etc). Possibly why it's cheap.

Otherwise a cyclocross bike with discs would be good. Or if cycling in a lot of rain a belt drivetrain with hub gearing.

Nothing wrong with the Giant Contend or affordable Treks. The Trek has long drop brakes so you can install normal road fenders.

Another option is the Avanti Giro models. 42cm chain stay with rack capability. $700

99 Bikes sell the Norco Valence models that have long drop brakes and rack capability. I was told that they won't be getting in 2018 models in stock (for normal rim brake Valence models).

The Kona Rove AL is a bit heavy but can run extra wide tyres and lots of room for fenders and a pannier rack. $999

I am thinking that the Aldis racing bike sale might be reproduced again soon if you are that way inclined. They usually have revolving sales regularly. May be call them for a referral date.
