Dislocated and Fracture Shoulder

Postby Parker » Thu Sep 07, 2017 2:54 pm

Where else do you go when you want some sympathy and understanding? To the forums of course.

I was riding up Mother-in-Law on Sunday at about 5km/h when my front wheel came up on a right hand turn, I went to grab the tree nearest to me, so I didn't fall down and ended up hitting the tree with such force that I dislocated my shoulder and in-turn fractured the humerus. They got my camel back off and got my bike off me, I stood up and my should popped back into place... probably from all the tape on my shoulders from the physio the day before.

It really hurt. A lot.

I went to SJOG Midland and was seen to pretty quickly, so I can't complain about that. My physio sent me of for an MRI which I did yesterday and now I'm waiting for the results!

I couldn't put the picture up of the xray.

It's now Wednesday and my movement has improved heaps, so I'm hopeful I'm not of the mountain bike for to long

Bugger! That is too bad. Hope your rapid improvement continues and you are back to normal sooner than later.

Has Parker ever been "normal" - I thought she was much better than that. :D

Having buggered both my shoulders at various times you have my sympathy. Until you have done it you don't realise just how hard it is to imobilise your shoulder - you bump it during your sleep, put tension through it when you sit up, Argh

Hope you have a speedy recovery

This made me laugh :D

The MRI is in, so I go to the physio tomorrow morning for more information :D

How exciting!

*crosses legs* Shoulders - they definitely hurt. I exploded mine out in an OTB about 9 years ago. Still remember it vividly. :x

Hope it's not too bad and you heal up quickly. The good news with popping back in so quickly is that the ligaments might not be as badly stretched, reducing the likelihood pf a repeat. The physio is a great first port of call.

Sorry. Having suffered three shoulder dislocations, six tendon reattachments and snapped longhead tendons in left and right your expectation falls on deaf ears.

Ouch, I fracture dislocated my shoulder in 2006. 9 pins and a plate and 7 months of no riding.

Hope yours heals quickly.

So, I've been to the physio for the results, there is only minor tearing, nothing that can't be fixed by squishing my tendons and muscles back together.

Six weeks of the bike to start with and then we re-evaluate after that point. No sling required anymore, I am allowed to drive but it really hurts when I park so I'll just take the bus for a few weeks, I used to drive because I'd go to Yoga in the evenings but can't do that now...

Did this exact injury last week. Came off in wet, hyperextended the arm/shoulder and gained a “greater tubercle fracture” for my efforts. MRI and CT this Friday. Still, 4 months of Peaks Challenge training down the toilet. I’m over the grieving period now but the 2 months off the bike is going to kill me.

Good that you got the shoulder back in place so soon.

The conventional advice is to head to emergency, wiat to be seen and, several hours after the dislocation it gets put back. I've never figured why a delay is so favourable over dealing with it as soon as possible.

Maybe I'm just lucky because all three times I have dislocated a shoulder it has been able to be put back in situ (albeit with quite a lot of pain while doing so).

That was my thought but the doc said no go at this stage. Have to wait until after tomorrows MRI/CT scans to ascertain the full injury before the recovery plan can be set

Of course, as much as we try we cant emulate the pros

There's a more conservative technique for anterior shoulder dislocation, that is harmless enough it is safe for first aiders to do, for recurrent dislocations. For more experienced first aiders, it could be trialled carefully on a first subluxation.

As a rule, for first dislocations it is best to immobilize and go to emergency asap because a x-ray should always be done. fractures, suspect ligament or capsular tears, neural compromise, and lack of radial pulse need to be considered.

When a shoulder dislocates, it is muscle spasm that causes most of the pain and resistance to relocation.
If a first aider focuses on relaxing the protective muscles, relocation is more likely to happen spontaneously while supporting the weight of the arm and performing small subtle arm movements.
Cunningham's technique has only been around for a few years, so is not ubiquitous in emergency depts.

This vid demonstrates.

Nevertheless, every time a shoulder dislocates, you are best to see a doctor soon after, as nerves and other tissue are vulnerable can be progressively compromised with each dislocation. There's a universal protocol that once a shoulder begins repetitively dislocating with minimal force, that the only option is surgical tightening of the capsule that holds it together. No amount of muscle strengthening exercise will protect a lax shoulder joint.

I would prefer to have my shoulder put back in, rather than sit on that hot SA bitumen for a few seconds.

Have my outcome from the specialist.
Not trying to hijack thread/OP, but in case anyone comes looking for answers to a similar experience

- 2mm non displaced greater tuberosity fracture
- No surgery needed on the basis being;
a) My age, being south of 40 the bones still heal well/quickly
b) Occupation, office worker that doesn’t require lifting as part of job
c) Overall health, as regular cyclists we are generally healthy and if we eat well too we have less complications
- 6 weeks in total in sling before being referred to a physio
- 3 weeks in I can now take the sling off for an hour or two in the evening to loosen the muscles
- Non-resistant movement exercises from week 4
- ETA back on the trainer end of Feb or early March which is 7-8 weeks post accident

3 weeks today since my crash and im in this position of “manageable discomfort”, no need for meds and have just got used to being uncomfortable

Sleeping with a sling is still a PITA along with other daily things you take for granted. On a positive note there is an end in sight so long as I listen to the doctor, something I usually don’t do!
