As we mentioned two weeks ago, it’s been a particularly challenging month for us, but we’re excited to report that the first Karoos have left our manufacturing facility in China, and are currently on their way to some of our earliest customers!

Just read the comments in DC Rainmaker (#252 & #271) for some enlightening correspondence. Another good example why steering clear and holding onto the money is sometimes a good idea.

Nothing out there is perfect though, so if it works for you, great.

I know it's never been stated but I had hoped that there would be the opportunity at some point to take advantage of the karoo's android environment. Deploying custom apps, or even just play store apps, would have made it potentially a very, very interesting device. Unfortunately, based on the rate of development just to get a fully featured bike computer deployed I'm not hopefully that it will ever be any more than just that.

Bucketing down today so won't get it wet on its first day.
Annoyances so far...
-No auto-sync to Garmin, TP etc, just the usual Strava fluff. I assume this will come with time.
-Limited map selection size, can't select from Sunshine Coast to Brisbane to GC all in one map, you need to download multiple maps.
Edit: I should add a positive - the screens tactile touch is brilliant, even with the demo protection sheet on.

The 1st one would be a no go (especially straight out of the box), is it really that hard to do uploads to multiple users ?Crawf wrote:

.....
So, with the 2nd point, does that mean you can't have a single map (like download from Open street maps) ? The Wahoo bolt has maps from all over the world (routable and readable) pre-loaded.

Currently no access to the internal storage, I downloaded a map all ready to load up, only to be shot down by lack of functionality

1) The Karoo is very much a beta device aimed at pre-order, kickstarter types. Anyone expecting any more than that is dreaming. It's a journey. I don't see them having a device on shelves in bike shops that you would actually want to use as a daily driver for a while.
2) The Garmin 510 was a terrible device when released to market - unusable ANT, terrible stability, no sync to strava despite and it was billed as a flagship, ready for market device. They've done similar with other devices, just raced them to market and caught up on the firmware later.
Garmin deserves to cop flack when they sell a device as market ready and it's not. Karoo deserves a bit of leeway because this is their first device and their open and transparent progress reporting has made it pretty obvious that users aren't going to get a finished, polished device when it arrives. Anyone who bought a Karoo with the expectation that it would be delivered on time and that it would be better than a 1030 the day it was delivered wasn't realistic with their expectations based on the information available.
Regardless, pretty happy with my choice to take a refund.

I'd argue against that. And it's not their 1st device.march83 wrote: ... Karoo deserves a bit of leeway because this is their first device and their open and transparent progress reporting has made it pretty obvious that users aren't going to get a finished, polished device when it arrives.....
Yep, kickstarter means lower expectations, but it shouldn't be that market un-ready.
I mean, no elevation recording ??????
