In January 2009, a group of riders will jump on bikes and pedal 780kms from Bangkok to Khao Lak, finishing at the Baan Tharn Namchai orphanage to raise money and awareness of Hands Across the Water. That's nearly 780kms in 9 days! Leaving Bangkok on the 18th January, the riders will journey down the hot & humid Thai coastline reaching the Orphanage on Australia Day, 26th January. The final few kilometers of the ride we will be escorted by the orphans who will ride the bikes given to them through Hands Across The Water and their generous supporters. We will also be celebrating the opening of the 2nd orphanage on Australia Day (can't wait!)
What is Hands you ask?
Hands is an Australian charity founded by Peter Baines in 2005, following his work in Thailand in response to the Boxing Day Tsunami. Peter wanted to contribute in a more meaningful way to the lives of the many children who had been orphaned by the Tsunami and it was through this belief that Hands Across the Water was born.
Hands' first project was to fund the construction of a home for the orphaned children of the badly damaged Ban Nam Khem region of Phuket (near the Khao Lak resort area) which was opened in August 2006. Since the opening of the first orphanage (Baan Tharn Namchai) in 2006 Hands Across the Water has raised over $900,000 AUD and has built a second orphanage. They are also supporting the construction of a community centre and the purchase of a rubber plantation to provide a regular income stream and move the orphanage towards longer-term self sustainability.
How can you help?
The Hands Across the Water Board are committed to ensuring that every cent of your donation goes directly to the children. With your donations either through buying a book or sponsoring Daniel in the ride you will be helping to look after these beautiful kids who have been through so much.
