Cycling Tanami Road

Postby benno » Thu Apr 26, 2007 3:03 am

It probably sounds like a stupid idea, and maybe it is. But has anyone ever cycled or tried to cycle the Tanami Road from Hall's Creek to Alice Springs? Motorbikes have done it, so why not bicycles?

Does anyone have otherwise some reliable information about water supply on that road? Would a 20lt capacity be enough? (Water seems to me the most serious concern on that road.)
Is there any good chance of traffic, that could help out in an emergency (like maybe one car per day)?

Thanks!

A guy called David did it last year from Alice to Halls Creek. He has a write up of it in his blog here. It's a 4 part article and should give you some idea of the road.

From personal experience here in WA, riding off road for a few days without water resupply 20 litres is not enough. Do not put all of your water in one container. Break it up into lots of small containers as it's easier to move around and if the container breaks, you only lose a small amount.

It should be a good ride.
