Night Light

Postby brendancg » Fri Dec 19, 2008 6:47 pm

Dear all

I have been talked into doing a 24hr MTB race in April next year. Problem is I don't have a light yet and I need to train riding at night. So here is the question, which one do you recommend. I have looked at and I like the Minewt X2 however this is a handlebar mount. Is a helmet mount better for this type of riding. Forgive me in advance, I am a roadie who has been talked into the odd MTB ride (including one insane 24hr period to come).
Yesterday was an easy day.

Ayup kit. ayup.com.au

You want a handlebar and helmet mount. If you just have handlebar the far side of bumps on the trail will be pitch black.

Just helmet is passable if you can only have one.

I second the ayup lights. Just brilliant (in every sense of the word). I use them for my morning rides in the winter. In pitch black, they are able to illuminate a pedestrian at 30 metres. I'm sure they'll do the same for trees in the bush ;) Worth every dollar.

I'll be ordering AyUps tomorrow, on special at the moment. :)

Another vote for Ay Ups. Best combination of brightness, battery life and durability. And yes, go the MTB kit if you can afford it.

+5 for Ay-Ups! You don't want to buy anything else! Another plus is that spares are easily and quickly available.

As Bnej said you really need both handlebar mount and helmet mount. For the reasons stated and also redundancy. If a branch happened hook the power lead or knock a light off you still have light :D

I also own and recommend the MTB kit.

Enjoy the event :D

Ayups are nice, but REAL lights are over 500 lumen.

Have a look at the offerings from HID Technologies.

Thanks for the help. Now that I have both I can go to the minister for war and finance with a tender process and get the approval and financial backing. The HID looks good but I think for the same price two lights which covers what all think will lead me to the Ayup.

Well, I am going to be a fly in the ointment. Ayups are definitely great lights, but I'm also very happy with my DIY version of LED lights, from between $50 and $90 all up.

Run a Google search based on the following term for more info:

I didn't think he still made the HID, the current light is a 4-LED ~ 1000 lumen unit. If you want to try home-built, Cutter Electronics has a kit.

To add to Graeme's suggestion, I have a summary of the main postings hereand elsewhere on lights. This includes a links to tests of the Fenix L2Ds and Ayups.
