Re-covering seats

Postby familyguy » Thu Jan 01, 2009 9:14 pm

Has anyone had any experience with re-covering seats??

I have a Gipiemme saddle off a Norco that I bought for my brother that was in a right state (torn, scratched and stained cover). I pulled off the old cover, and the foam looks OK underneath. Its in good 'mechanical' nick, so I'd like to re-cover it.

What material should be used?
Where can I get it?
What sot of glue or adhesive should be used?
Is there anyone who does this for a fee?

Actually, the foam looks pretty well 'gone' to me, a fair few chunks missing.

it looks a little moth eaten, but I reckon it'd still be serviceble - if hardly concourse condition

I'm sure I've seen a pictorial HOW-TO, or at least "HOW-I-DID-IT" on such matters somewhere - google some keywords with "site:bikeforums.net" added... it might be there.

What I do remember was the guy traced out the outline of the seat onto his new covering material - thinn leather, or vinyl I'm not sure - but he added like a 1-2" border with the tracing. Then it was just a matter of using some sort of hand clip stapler or similar and just gently tucking the added skirt in around the underside of the seat.

Failing that - take it to a motor trimmers or an upholestrers - probably a trifling little job for them (still charge ya though I bet!) I'm sure it's the same basic process - just smaller area.

that reminds me of wanting to get my favourite tatty old rocker-recliner lounge chair recovered in canvas. The perfect back verandah chair. (yes yes... in my bachelor pad)

Thats the bad side. The back corner was an obvious road rash patch, so the foam may need a little extra pad there, but its workable. Far from a bin job if I can re-cover the thing.

Found the BF.net link here for those interested.

Thanks.

that's exactly the puppy I was thinking of. That bloke 'singlespeedemon' did a good job. It's worth having a shot at I reckon. Wonder how well it'd wear.

What sort of staples & guns do you think people are using? The only staples I am used to are the 26/6 office variety. :?

Finally got sick of this hanging around, sourced some leather on ebay, and got the job done. The material is probably a little bit too thick to be perfect for the job, but after some stretching and such it folded away quite neatly.

Heavy duty staple gun from the hardware store, which you hold sort of like a pistol and squeeze. Using ~4-5mm staples (that's the depth of the sharp points, not the width).
