Bike for the mrs

Hi guys, the fiance wants to start doing some bike riding with me more often so we need to get her a new bike. It wont be anything serious mainly on bike paths or gravel tracks with an occasional xc track. We dont want to spend a fortune on her bike and are looking at spending around $400-600. Any suggestions on what bikes to look at?

Thanks for the suggestion but being her first bike since the k-mart pile of rust she has now for a bike wouldn't feel comfortable buying without her test riding it.

Any other suggestions?

cell are pretty good and have been known to ship bikes to your LBS if you are serious in buying. out of the brands previously mentioned i'd prefer giant even with the price rises they are still so competitive with value for money, another avenue is to try anaconda as they stock jamis kona and the like and they do some pretty good specials. there are a couple of entry level jamis bikes which are ok and have a good small frame geometry....

oh and the new malvern star mtb's are also brilliant for the money amazing spec and really good quality frame build compared to just about anythng on the market....

ultimately it comes down to what she feels comfy on take her to the LBS get her to ride, i did with my fiance she hated riding and refused to get on a bike so i convinced her to come and try some if she couldn't find one she liked i'd stop pestering her half hour later walked out with two new bikes and she now has the cycling bug and has even started her own retro project.....
