Safest place to go for a ride?
Postby whichway » Tue Jan 13, 2009 7:39 pm
What is the safest place to go for a ride. A few provisos
Must be on road (bike paths are too dangerous - glass, pedestrians etc)
Min 20km round trip (toodling around the block a few times doesn't count)
Time can be a factor (need not be at peak hour)
I have no idea really, but I do find that riding very early (starting before 5am in Summer) seems a lot safer than riding later in the day because there are fewer cars (no daylight saving up here so quite light at that time). Main roads ironically can be relatively safe because people on side streets don't just barge on out. Esplandes are pretty good because of no side streets, but bad because of people opening their doors without looking.
Any ideas

My 6th sense tells me that you are located at -25.47250S and 136.4049E, so you really can go in any direction across that vast Simpson Desert. Just watch out for those pesky kangaroos.whichway wrote:What is the safest place to go for a ride. A few provisos

Parks with designated bike riding tracks.whichway wrote:Brisbane
But I was also after generic advice regarding places that might be generally pretty safe.

Are you ready? No? Too bad. Here it comes:
"Knobbly tyres."
"Full suspension."
"SINGLE TRACK!"
Ha! Take that, then!

+1, except for the FS bit. Knobby tyres and single track, and you're set to go.trailgumby wrote:No pedestrians, no traffic, clean air, no glass or crap on the roads? What, do you want it all,do ya?! Oh, and no car doors? Geez, you're hard to satisfy aren't you! Well, I have a few choice words for guys like you ...

Worried about glass? Get some tyre liners and fit them as per the instructions. Then you can ride on any paved surface almost with impunity.
But the dirt's more fun ...
Cheers,
Graeme

What no panniers? Where I live a track of that quality is regarded as a commuter route.trailgumby wrote:No pedestrians, no traffic, clean air, no glass or crap on the roads? +1, and you can do a few laps on the crit track you'll pass along the way! That bikeway from Toombul shopping centre to Nudgee/Boondall/Shorncliffe is good - no pedestrians, no glass, no cars, good surface, absolutely flat. Toombul-Nudgee will give you about 20 km round trip.
Cheers...Michael

nice placees to ride
Postby elantra » Thu Jan 29, 2009 12:09 am
Have you been out to The Gap ?
It is a nice ride along a bikepath from Marist College Ashgrove, right beside the creek.
It is a bikepath and it is a bit fragmented but is quite scenic, especially along beside Ashgrove golf course.
Very little pedestrian traffic. But there is one one section just before you get to the golf course where the "water dragons" hang out along the path. A friend of mine was blisssfully gliding along and a big one ran through his front wheel - and got tangled up in d front forks.
Result he got catapulted over handlebars and water dragon was last seen limping away with a bend in spine.
Seriously though it is a nice ride, and it finishes perilously close to the Macca's at The Gap. Its the sort of ride that you can do just about anytime of the day, there is plenty of shade and as long as you stay off the main road, traffic is not an issue. Good and safe riding to you.

I second that.reddogbic wrote:Up and down Riverside Drive South Brisbane/West End is a good training circuit.
Riverside drive has few to no cars and no pedestrians, you could ride the whole length 4-5 abreast some days.
You can always park there easy too if you didn't want to ride through traffic to get there.
It's a good place to do short time trials too.
