Buying second hand

Howdy
Was wondering if any have had experience buying second hand from LBS
Has there been a warranty or once you are out the shop that is it.
We all tend to take the bike for a test ride but inevatibly it tends to be on the longer rides half way up the hill when things tend to go sideways.
What was the chances of taking it back to fix any problems and how long did they allow after service care? Other than guilt and doing the right thing are they legally bound?
