Mac Safari and Forums Login Problems

Postby AUbicycles » Sun Jan 11, 2009 7:08 am

With the current Macintosh Safari browser (and possibly together with current 10.5.6 update) there are log in problems - logging in simply doesn't work.

I know about this issue however can't predict when it will be solved - either a browser update by apple or a fix in the forum software. For now I suggest Firefox browser - its a pretty good browser.

I can log in with the latest Safari on Intel Mac, but the site just can't remember me and keep me logged in for the next visit.

Try these and see if it makes a difference.

- Clear cookies.
- Repair Keychain (Performed through Keychain Access in your Utilities folder).
- Accept cookies only for sites you navigate to.

No guarantee any of it will work but it may shake out a few skeleton somewhere.

Also worth looking into 1Password as it makes logging in so much easier.

Here is the Safari fix:

1 clear all cookies,
2 clear your cache/temp internet files
3 close the browser
4 try accessing bicycles.net.au and logging in again.

Background
Safari was having a problem handling cookies - with the first reports of issues I updated the cookie settings for the forum - the safari browser didn't like it and gave up. To solve it you need to clear the cookies ... in theory only the bicycles.net.au cookies, though a clean start will also mean that for any other forums you use, the issues should be solved. (The forum owners however may have to update their cookie settings).

So it all works, I have tested it... but... back to Firefox for me anyway :)

Cheers
Christopher

p.s. Thanks sogood, that would have worked as well.. and with the keychain could also prevent the problem recurring if mac kicks up a stink.

I tried a complete reset of Safari a week ago but it didn't fix it.

Just emptied the cookies again, cleared the cache and looks like it's good to go.

I tried all the tips a while ago and still no joy ! I have two users on my mbp and both have the same issue still, so the problem is replicated across different preferences etc. One was working for a few days after the other one, so stuffed if I know.

Did all that, I can log in but I need to log in every time, even though I've ticked the 'log me in automatically' box.

Correct, needs to login on every visit. I strongly suspect this is a bug in the system that came with the last security update where it was said there was a risk that hackers can access PWs stored by Safari.

Given past SW update cycles, I suspect a solution would come through with the next security update which tends to come out every month or two. Fingers crossed.

In the meantime, 1Password is a wonderful utility for storing PWs and logging into web sites.

sogood - still a bug for you as well?

damn. Did a quick followup -seems that Safari is playing up. Here is athread on another forum that deals with the same issue. No solution yet though.

I think we will just have to wait until a solution becomes available in safari for this one. Did I mention how well Firefox works for me :)

At least we don't have to spend time update virus definition in the waiting time ;)

I know that Firefox has improved, but performance wise, Safari still beats on paper. And I am in no rush for the numerous feature modules one can add.

Anyway, I think the next security or 10.5.x update will resolve the problem.

The strange response is that the registration seems to time out after a while. After which, user/pw will need to be re-entered. But as suggested earlier, 1Password is just wonderful for logging into the various web sites and is compatible with Safari 4.0b1.

No problems here. I keep the golden rule. If it works, don't fix it or update it.

Safari 3.2.1 on Tiger :D
