Velodromes in Perth

Postby bigacorn » Thu Feb 12, 2009 9:26 pm

Are there any other velodromes expect the speeddome

Indoor
or outdoor?

Man I thought XC mountain biking was bumpy and rough/tough but track riding in the speed dome was just as bad. only joking its not that bad

Notice to all track bike manufactures come to the speedome where you will see if our bikes are stiff/solid.

as far as I know the Speeddome replace the outdoor concrete track that was in Mt Hawthorn. Its since been torn up. There was also an outdoor track somewhere in Midland, dont know if it is still around.
The speeddome is it and I have heard tales that the is a group that want to "repurpose it" for indoor hockey or something like that.

was sort of behind the bowling club (tha tis what it always looked like to me) at coner Morrison & Gt Northern hwy, was only moderately banked, not as severe as the 1962 Empire Games track that should have been preserved as a heritage structure.

An old guy I ride with regularly used to ride the velodrome at Mt Hawthorn he described the transitions as "rather abrupt" it's a pity they didn't keep it being in such a central location.

getting rid of it was part of the trade off for the speeddome. Played a few times on th soccer pitch on the inside of the track. Was a good ball return but taking a corner you you started your run up on the sprinters line

Considering the immense popularity of cycling in Perth, I'm surprised that there is only one velodrome. Are there any functional velodromes elsewhere in WA?
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

Considering the population of Perth and rather limited amount people that race here I'm actually surprised there is a velodrome here, and a world class one at that. I just wish it was a bit more centrally located.

Midland has quite a history of cycling, thus the velodrome location I guess, but also explains my astonishment that the cyclepath doesn't follow the railway all the way to Midland.

Old Midland track was used until around 1987, one year before the opening of the Speedome in 1989 & after the the closure of old Midland track we had to commute to Collie most weeks for track racing which was a surprisingly good outdoor track. Mt Newman had a track which I saw when we had a tour there in 1986, Medina had a track which supposedly had trees in the infield.

Anway here is the current state of old Midland track in Sept 08 , still rideable with good tyres . Keep visits to daylight hours though!

Collies still functioning (I think)

Collie cycle club is still trying to raise funds to have the surface redone last time I was talking to their secretary.

I didn't know it had a track, I'm scheduled to be there on Wed so I may make a quick detour on my way home and check it out.

Cheers,

Gary

Posting this here for want of a better place - some footage of the Lake Monger Velodrome (now Litis Stadium?) before the Commonwealth Games in 1961.

Works fine if you use the proper shareyoutube tags instead of the URL tags.

I dunno how it would have compared to a modern track, but the banking at Lake Monger was very intimidating.

Doesn't look like it but it does give a very good flash back into Perth history

I noticed that the old velodrome in Northam is now gone, was just off the main drag but fenced off for years and collecting glass. I suspect that a few other country towns besides those mentioned above had a track.

I had heard that Northam one was back in use or trying to get back in use a couple of months ago. I was not paying attention, not a trackie and too far to go for me

That video is gold. "Businessmen now show the knee." Well worth a watch to the end. The rhyming is pure poetry.
