Training: Get some air

Postby Aushiker » Tue Mar 10, 2009 1:54 pm

G'day

Another interesting article/debate topic? from BikeRadar.com
The idea that you can improve your fitness by sleeping in an oxygen tent or doing a few breathing exercises in front of Eastenders has always seemed a little too good to be true. New evidence indicates that improving your breathing ability may be more important than previously thought, and that endurance athletes can improve simply by paying attention to their breathing off the bike...

Yes, it is an interesting area.

I have one current client who makes extensive use of altitude tent, and occasionally he has altitude training in the schedule. I include some specific workout types to take advantage of the time at altitude.

One thing is for sure, not everyone responds the same way to hypoxic conditions, so you need to experiment to find the best solution for yourself.

It didn't mention hyperoxic training, which can be a bit brutal on the legs.

As for the breathing devices, interesting they come down on the positive benefit side. I viewed the studies I've seen as being equivocal on the matter. I have no specific experience with such products.

Those blue V-i-a-g-r-a pills can benefit some at altitude. Not sure how much energy they would have left during the day for training. ;)
