Tour Suggestions

Postby Sherpa » Mon Jun 04, 2007 11:20 pm

Hi All,
I'm a new boy here.
I just started riding again as part of my re-hab (smashed knee and femur, MBA).

Once I'm fit enough I want to go for a cruise with some friends anywhere in NSW.
We're aiming for 2-300km in a few days, but I need a fairly flat route.

I have a house in Batemans Bay so we could shoot off from there but all the roads in the area are too damned hilly.
We have the time and we're willing to travel to get to a nice ride.

Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Just remember, no hills. I hate them.

Ahh, you forget the obvious - all downhill with a train trip home again. :D

Sadly, I can't suggest any routes that would achieve this but may I welcome you to the asylum, assure you that the pain of membership will fade as the psychosis develops and welcome your thoughts on recovering from knee pain - it's a rather common theme among people turning to cycling but more often alluded to rather than discussed.

Welcome aboard Sherpa.

Wait a minute: Sherpa? How much will you charge me to take my panniers to the top of that hill over there? :)

Can't help you with trips in NSW, but if you ever want to tour around the Kalgoorlie area of WA, I'd be happy to tell you where to go. And there are definitely no hills on those roads.

Cheers,
Graeme

I rode to Wollongong before my crash when I was woefully unprepared. Both physically and the chatty bike I used.
I caught the train home.

I'm now using a MTB I was tearing down hills on.
Since I'm no longer allowed to do that, I've tried to make it usable on the road.
It's OK, but how much difference would a road bike make?
I was thinking of buying one this week.

Also, thanks for the greetings.
People sure are friendly in this part of town.

Graeme, I'd make the worst sherpa on Earth, unfortunately.
The name is to honour the mighty Subaru Sherpa (now living at some wreckers place)

Get back into riding on your mtb before you buy a road bike. A road bike will make a dramatic difference, but at this stage, you don't know if you want a tourer or a racer, a jack of all trades or a time trialler. Your mtb will do all you want to do for quite awhile, particularly if you fit slicks (rather than knobblies). Ease yourself into the scene and then decide what you want to buy.

Thanks Richard,
I was shocked at how much sweeter it felt with slicks.

West of The Rock (30ks South of Wagga) is good and flat. You could(?) catch a train to The Rock or to Wagga. At Wagga you can buy Isobutane/Propane Butane type fuels. Cooking fuels aren't allowed on trains or buses (supposedly, nowadays) and ride on the Travelling Stock Routes. Camp in the Travelling Stock Reserves (camp for free, after notifying the LHPA Regional Rangers) or ride on the back country roads along the Murrumbidgee or even down along the Murray, perhaps catching the train to Henty and back. A few days isn't much time to do this ... but it sure is flat out there, so find a few extra days.

In the Country and Regional Section here, rural Forumites have a few shots taken out that way. It is flat.

... and Rifraf recently did a intrepidly famous tour, across the flooded flat lands. Lots to read.
