Ipswich

Postby winona_rider » Mon Feb 23, 2009 9:05 pm

I was born in Ipswich, the same town that spawned Pauline Hanson and Craig McDermott and Alfred Langer and a bunch of Walters. Maybe some other peeps - I dunno. Probs.

So I can't help feeling a bit of a "bond" with the place - though my better judgment might think otherwise. maybe. :)

Anyway - there are two awesome rides happening there rather soon:

The Ipswich 100 (which doesn't involve much Ipswich but the country areas west). This ride looks amazing. It will be my first time. (APRIL 5)

The mall 2 mall ride (APRIL 26) from Brisbane to Ipswich - a fantastic 50k ride that is FAST! (departs Brisbane square and ends up at Queens park. This ride leaves room for a blistering pace for the first 50 and a slow recovery-ride back 2 bris after a decent feed and rest. How crazy-awesome is that?)

So yeah - just thought I'd put it down. Anyone keen?

Bris to Ippy sounds good. Just having a look at their website.

Thanks for these dates for Ipswich 100 and the Mall to Mall. Can i enquire about the route for the Ipswich 100, is it being organised by any particular bike club or community group?
Some of the country roads out past Ipswich would be fine for such an event, Harrisville in this region is a quite charming town to visit, has a few pubs and a winery and was the setting for a TV series some yrs ago called "fat cow hotel" or something like that.
Thanks again, Elantra

How about a tour of Ipswich, or to Ipswich and surrounds, Saturday morning.

Thanks for the info that looks like a bonzer route (Ipswich 100/50/10)
Take note of the organizing committee asking readers of the website to pass the word around and get bums on saddles, and best to register by the end of march.
On another note anybody heading south this saturday there is annual Grafton -to -Inverell (non-competitive) ride, which is a bl@#dy long way with some bl@#dy big hills but something to dream of doing one day.
The A grade and International racers do the competitive ride, which i think happens much later in the year

Anyone interested in riding back to Brisbane after the Ipswich 100 ride instead of catching the train back?

I'm not 100% that I can do the ride yet, but will know inthe next few days.

Will riding back from Ipswich make the imperial century or will we need to go a bit further for that? Sounds like fun :D

OK I'm definitely in, will register tonight.

i figure this:

5 kms from home to Roma Street train station.
1.5kms from Ipswich train station to ride start.
101 kms - ipswich 100
50kms to windsor

that leaves roughly an extra 4 kms which i can pick up around downey park.
swt.

but now i'm thinking: does the 161 count if you do it in separate bits like above?

Got my ride info and wrist band etc in the mail on Friday.

Has anyone else actually registered yet?? It is only 2 weeks away.

Coincidentally I was talking to a volunteer from last year's event on the weekend, she said it is a great ride and beautiful countryside.

Have any of you guys done this before? Is it anything like the BNE to Gold Coast? What sort of pace is it?

Pretty keen to do it.

i got my wrist band too!

i haven't done it before but know someone who has. i think it will be just like the briz to gold coast - in the sense that there will be groups formed at a bunch of different riding levels. so if you get dropped by one group just try and keep up with the next group that comes by.

the roads look pretty quiet...the scenery will be awesome... not too hilly either.

Excellent!!

I'll be catching the train out...I'll have the mobile (of course) so we can hopefully hook up from the start.

Moz...maybe we will meet up too.

I did this ride last year and absolutely loved it, very friendly and relaxed. It was very foggy at the start, didn't really know where I was going, so I just followed everyone else, and when the fog lifted we were out in the country. Not too much in the way of hills, and the road surface is pretty good. Most of it is on back roads with very little traffic. The only busy part is from Peaks crossing on, (Boonah Ipswich road I think,) but they have changed the course this year to avoid as much of this road as possible.

Incidentally, there is a great series of social rides coming up in SEQ over the next 12 months;
  • Ipswich (100k) in April
Tweed Gran Fondo (120k) or Brisbane Noosa (160k) in June
Byron Bay Currumbin (160k) in November
and Grafton Inverell (228k) in Feb (assuming its on next year, and, OK, it is NSW)
Its a very tempting progression!
