Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge 2009

Postby Pax » Wed May 13, 2009 5:29 am

:D Ok Qlders: its time to start this annual thread for 2009 :D

Registrations open on June 15th on the BQ website.

In a happy coincidence that is the day after the USM Bris to Noosa Imperial so we should all be motivated and register early (or the opposite depending on how we go on the Noosa ride :P )

The ride is on Sunday Oct 11th.

BQ is aiming for 10,000 riders: the largest ride ever held in Qld.

I'll be doing this ride again :) Hopefully I'll have a better time than 8+ hours from last year!

I won't be doing it this year as I will be overseas. I guess I'll just have to try out the hills around Tuscany instead.

Pax, I basically bonked big-time. I hadn't eaten that morning as I was having trouble keeping food down. I forced a piece of toast down my throat about 30 minutes before the ride, and off we went. At around 15Km I started feeling unwell (overheating, which is a problem I often encounter during exercise), and had to pull over for a bit. By that time, my riding buddies had vanished into the yonder. I spent the first 30-something Km on my own. By the time I reached the first stop, one of my riding buddies had got sick of waiting and took off. My mum waited for me and we rode on. My legs gave up at around the 50Km mark, and it was all I could do to make it to the second rest stop. The last 20Km all but killed me. It was a bloody awful experience, but I was not going to give up. I finally made it at just a touch over 8 hours. Shittest. Ride. Ever.

Hi, I have a couple of questions:

My hubby & I would really like to do this ride. I believe there is transport to bring us back from the GC to Brissie and that your bikes are also transported back - is that correct? To have your bikes brought back, do you need to have them in a bag or container of some sort? We're quite new at this, so any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Didge69 :)

Ya, I know. I've done a couple 100Km rides since and have been OK. I think the hills really did me in. Which means.. *shudder* I guess I gotta do more hills. Sigh. I hate 'em. Never mind, necessary evil I guess. I'm gonna get me a new bike soon, so maybe that will be a nice incentive to broaden my horizons :)

Didge - I think they'll take your bike as is, but not 100% sure. It might be worth contacting Bicycle Queensland on this one - www.bq.org.au.

Hills are fantastic.

dude - they are like transcendental meditation. (and i am not taking the p*ss here)

This is why:
1) you go slow - time slows, the grinding rhythm of your legs... and then things suddenly gain perspective
2) you have to concentrate on your cadence and the pain - your other worldly problems suddenly pale in comparison
3) there's an intensity and the thrill of an achievement approaching. and things are organic. you can't coast (just like on a fixie). you are just spinning, trying to keep your head above water (not just metaphorically)
4) once you get over the pain your mind can wander. you will be surprised what thoughts are generated.
5) and then you can actually relax and embrace the rhythm.

OR.....the wonderful option of riding back to turn it into a K2 :D :D . I'll be doing that (no surprise to anyone...I'm always trying to find people to join me for return trips) so hopefully there will be some other forumites who'd like to join me???

Discovered last year that there are heaps of groups that ride back so it was easy to find a group to join.

Winona, will you be up for that on the fixie??

+1 my favourite riding....and there is a quiet beauty in the hills.....then the blast of the downhill to add a level of thril and adrenaline after the meditation...very yin yang. (not that there are any of those types of hills on the Bris to Gold Coast ride :( )

Well... after the 160km to Noosa in June (it's just a month away! wow!) planning just a hundred in October would not be challenging enough :) I'm going to ride home. Last year I saw many riders on their way back.

Excellent memories of the Ipswich return ride are flooding back...and this time we probably won't need Winnona (the human GPS) to direct us through the back streets on his own (that was my excuse for sucking his wheel last time  ).

I am hoping this year they'll improve where they'll finish at the Gold Coast. The 2 stops last year were brilliant, lots of food and drink and facilities were easily accessible. However the finish line at Gold Coast was terrible. There was no food, drink and you had to find a tap to refill your water bottle! I thought it was poorly done and I hope this year they'll make the finish the same as the 2 stops along the way. It's a massive effort riding 100km and it'll be good to see food and drinks at the end of the ride to recognise the extraordinary effort that many cyclists have endured to complete 100km!
