New mtb

I bought the lad a new mtb today

Seems his old bmx wasn't up to the job

So we went looking for second hand bikes ... and bought a new one instead

So here she is - the seat is set for long legged me, not for him



It's an Apollo Evolution XC. Got it for $409
Acera derailleurs
Ezi fire shifters
Weinmann ZAC-19 double wall rims
Tektro 10 Mechanical disc brakes
Truvativ x-flow cranks (what's the deal with mtb cranks? When shop blokes talk mtbs that's the first thing they mention).
Suntour XCT forks with 75mm travel.
Coke can frame but you can't have everything

More than I wanted to spent, more than I could afford to spend, but I wanted to get a bike that'd take the punishment a teenager is going to hand out over the next few years without going stupid on the price. I think I managed it.

He's happy - apparently we're all going riding tomorrow I've got the lass with me so it'll be on a bike path, but that'll give him a chance to bed in the brakes and things before assaulting the dirt. Guess I'll have to go dirt road touring with him next week (rotten school holidays )

It's quite a good looking little machine, that is, and for the money, the componentry is quite spiffy too! You certainly got the colour right.

I've been eyeing off, somewhat in vain, one of their higher-end mountain bikes, the Raceline Gravity dirt jump bike, for which I was quoted about $1500.

Incidentally, the new range of Apollos is out next month... I'm kinda hoping they have a decent dual suspension jobbie in the works, so I can have a hope of sticking with my mates on an Avanti D'Eght and a Giant AC when it starts getting rough.

Nah, it's the best I could think of, but I did think of you when I saw it ... and started to understand why you like the brute. I wasn't game enough to ask if I could go for a ride, the price tag made that seem a wee bit forward

Nice one Richard. Apollo makes a nice MTB, fond memories of my own return to two wheels before she got nicked

The spec list reads pretty good, as you said, the brakes will need bedding before hitting the trails, don't forget to keep an eye on pad adjustment and keep the fork staunchions clean for best wear.

You do realise that the Mauve Monster will need some upgrades now or you'll have even less chance of keeping up with the lad

At the speeds that Europa travels at, aerodynamics doesn't come into play.

Jokes aside, looks like a great bike, just needs some pedals, oh and some mud.

Doesn't need pedals - the lad's got SPD-Ls on his road bike. I am NOT buying a second set of shoes so he can use clipless on this thing.

Hope he enjoys it. It won't be long before he's leaving me for dead but it does mean we can go touring dirt tracks together, which is really why I want the mtb - can't be stuffed with the more rugged country. However, he's got a mate who'll go with him into real mtb territory so it's not as though I'll be holding him back.

Aerodynamics? Don't be rude, even my old campervan had aerodynamics ... yes, of a block of flats but aerodynamics for all that.
