Took my black beast for a 37km ride yesterday. Had no choice anyway the damn carbon seat post on my modern beast has been squashed, it doesn't take much to overtighten them!

The clouds opened up on me for a short burst. Had some minor issues shifting with the rear de-railler, won't go into the easiest gear nicely.

Will need to take a look at the adjustments today.

This retro thing is fun! Its funny, I had half the gears but I didn't miss having more. Too much choice is not always a good thing.

Question;

When do you know its the screw on the rear de-railler that need adjusting and not the cable?

Assuming you mean friction shifters ...

The screws limit the movement on the derailleur - you set them so that the chain shifts onto that cog (the small or the large depending on the screw) without flying off it. The cable adjustment is just there to control where the lever sits and it isn't all that critical.

Have a close look at the derailleur when it is close to throwing the chain onto the big sprocket. You will see that one of the (2) limit screws is close to a 'stop' on the parallelogram - this is the screw you need to adjust. You probably have to back it off slightly. You have to be careful that you don't set the stop too far out or you might find that the chain derails off the big sprocket into the spokes or the derailleur touches the spokes. Good luck.
