In the skin and frame, yes, but there is also a few parts made from Cr-Mo in there as well. These was actually a problem with an after market part for one type of plane, it had been made out of 4130 Cr-Mo instead of 531. (This was in an Air safty Magazine at my Dad's place a few months ago. He's an Avionics Engineer and always has aircraft magazines hanging around)

That anvil looks pretty strong TLL. You could probably hammer it all day and it wouldn't crack. :D

Bike is off to the shop in the morning. It better be replaced or its on!!!! Hopefully i can jag a 09 frame or something. It has actually cracked in 2 places, one on the bottom of the mid tube and the other near the front bottle holes on the mid tube. They are decent cracks too, not hairline.

I am sure it will work out with the replacement.

It brings me to wonder how bad trainers are on frames??? My bike has done around 10 sessons in the KK trainer. I do some sprint work in the trainer, but i would have thought if it was related to this, it would have broke in the carbon stays?

So, do turbo trainers damage alu frames or am i just unlucky? I wont be telling the LBS about the trainer though 8)

According to Mr Zinn, it doesn't and he is supposed to be an authority. However TLL's experience is different. Maybe Mr Zinn is referring to a 75Kg cyclists.

Third letter down.

If you're worried about it, you could always setup a cheap steel bike for the trainer like some have. I haven't had any trouble with my frame on the KK yet.

Inappropriate moment to gloat, mate. Will you still be gloating if Sneddon isn't covered and has to wear the cost of a replacement frame?

At which point they ...wait for it... patch them with carbon fibre. :P

That's what Hawker de Havilland do at Bankstown (or did, are they still there?). What do you think holds our F-111's together?

I got a couple of test pieces from a mate who worked at HdH a few years ago to use for fabricating model race car parts. Do you think I could get a drill to put a hole in it? Nup, not even a brand new titanium-nitrided bit would touch it. Danged thing would wander all over the place, even with a drill press. The only way to get a start was to mark the spot with the tip of a pointy stone in a Dremel. That was some real tough stuff. I think the resin was boron-impregnated. Yes, I wore breating apparatus when cutting it - again, with a dremel cutoff wheel. Sawblades wouldn't touch it either.

What were we talking about? Oh yes, snedden's downtube failure.

We now resume normal transmission...

CF's an excellent material - it's just that, driven by weight weenies, manufacturers are always trying to out-do each other by making the lightest parts. Which occasionally goes horribly wrong. It's one of those situations where there are diminishing returns, ie. removing 5% weight reduces the safety factor by significantly more. If they make 2kg CF frames, they would be unbreakable and significantly stiffer and stronger than a similar weight steel frame - but instead they go for 'compliant' and 'light'... and there are a very small percentage of frames that shatter in situations where an alloy/steel frame would simply deform.

I think it was Carroll Smith (famed motorsport engineer) who said : "The price of man in motion is the occasional collision". Holds true for bicycles as well as race cars.

dont most frames have a weight limit on the riders? cause that would help snap a frame!
