Uhmm did I miss something? Are we talking the Cervelo or the Specialized. I thought it was the Cervelo! A subject close to the heart. Post the pic Sneddon
And yes - fight the fight for the new frame cause that doesn't sound right.

I thought it was the Cervélo but don't think that there is a ALIZ in there.

That is a pretty bad crack and great that you were able to spot it before it got the better of you.

My mechanical engineering isn't anything but that is a weird place to crack.

I believe most alloy bike tubes are fluid formed these days. If you were custom defining tube thickness, where would you make the thinnest part?

Im not sure what the deal is, im only light (72kg) and the bike has only done 7000km in 9 months or so. Im guessing some sort of default in the frame, well hopefully specialized see it that way!

The part with the least load?

I agree. So I believe it either cracked there because of a manufacturing fault with the tube/frame, or because Specialized's computer modeling predicted that point would be the least load point for that tube and therefore put the least amount of metal there in the never ending quest for light weight. Of course there may be other factors at work here like Snedden using a fixed trainer which changes the way the cycling forces act on the frame. In the end I doubt anyone will care enough to really find out.

The shop told me they had no dramas with me using it on the trainer. They said they have guys who use the trainer heaps and never have dramas!

OK, sounds like you should have no problem with the warranty then. If they replace the frame (likely) and in the chance that you crack the next one in the same place, do you think they'll replace it again? [Just a hypothetical question]
I know we as a group are generally higher distance users of bikes, but it appears plenty of people have problems with frames and/or components cracking. I believe if car bodies cracked in less than 50,000Km the reputation of the manufacturer would be damaged, but this is generally unheard of. I think reasonable durability and safety are far more important than light weight.

No arguments from me there, but the question is then: what sells? If you had to choose between two bikes at the same price and spec, I'd bet money you'd take the lighter one.

Then you'd lose your money. Have you seen the bikes in my signature? I'd pick the more comfortable and/or durable one.

Well the shop rang me the other day. The bike has been looked at by spec australia and they have sent photos to USA. According to photos, it should be covered. The BB and broken section gets sent off to USA for assessment, then if covered, i get a new frame. No frames in OZ, so hopefully they upgrade my frame. Tarmac SL - 2? :D

It bloody lucky i have a 2nd bike or id be sitting here on my ass for a month waiting! Its tough to ride the cervelo every day :P , but hey...I have no other choice

Good to see you are likely to get a favourable result, but it is the waiting and mucking around that makes warranties worthless to me.

Personally I wouldn't be waiting, I would be talking your State consumer protection department. You might be surprised just how responsive the local distributor suddenly becomes. You shouldn't have to wait for the Specialized USA to respond; the distributor and retailer are subject to Australian law and should sort the problem out immediately, irrespective of what Specialized US think.
