What to do in Adelaide?

Thought his best for the SA forum, my partner wants to know what there is to do in Adelaide? I'll be riding Stage 4, what attractions are there? Aquariums, Zoo's, Museums etc etc. Shopping as well.


It's all part of convincing her it's a good iea to goto Adelaide!

I knock the obvious one off first, the Barossa ? book a wine tour the best wines in the world made here. The other one would be Kangaroo Island though thats something you would want to spend a couple of days doing and it will take you away from the racing so make sure thats booked for after the final stage. Same again for the Flinders Ranges, though it can be bloody hot up there that time of year Wilpena Pound is really amazing again make sure the dates dont interupt the racing. Plenty to do down Glenelg beach lots of shops, Cafes etc.. Maybe book a show at the Theatre.

there is not much in adelaide so to speak, our tourist stuff is elsewhere, ie barossa/KI/victor etc

the zoo is rubbish i went last week , all under construction and half the exhibits empty

my advice is go get a nice meal in north adelaide and have a few drinks after

By Jan 2010, the Pandas will be there and 90% of the construction complete.

Plenty of places in Adelaide for a nice meal including the suggested North Adel, but don't forget Henley, Glenelg, Gouger St etc

The Tour Down Under itself is actually designed to go to all of the best tourist spots, as the race is essentially a billboard for SA. Looking at the stages.... you go to:

City East End (good food, probably best part of the city)
Clare Valley (wine)
Adelaide Hills / Hahndorf (scenery, touristy stuff in Hahndorf)
McLaren Vale (more wine, scenery)
Victor Harbour / Goolwa (nice beach towns)
Willunga (another beach town)

...they're pretty much all the best places to visit!

This is a WIN-WIN situation because you can follow the race and your partner can check everything out at the same time!

We are keen on staying in Adel, watching the first stage, ride the 4th and watch the last stage live. Rest of the time have a look at Adel, see some sights, eat, sleep, might goto Glenelg for a look etc.

Wouldn't mind seeing where I used to live at Flasgstaff, wonder if it's changed in 16 years...

What sort of suburb is it now? Back when we lived there it was nice, not that big either, Morgage Hill it was called because of the cost of houses there. We lived in Justine Street.

back then would have been on the edge of the sprawl, whereas now it would be in the middle of it.

eat on gouger, go to glenelg, have some drinks/food on rundle street. All the shopping is pretty much in rundle mall. Go to a wine region if you can - its a nice day out.

Mapo - Australias BEST Japanese Restaurant (Gouger Street)

I reckon Mapo is Korean cuisine, not Japanese. They have also stopped doing the BBQ section at the back, which was fantastic! When in that area of town, can't go wrong with having a cheap meal in either of the food courts in Chinatown, get some chicken and rice from Ricky's chicken!

Would also recommend the duck at Mings Palace as well as their Fortune Chicken.

If you're into Argentinian fare, try a restaurant called Gaucho's. No idea if they're still open, but the food was great when I last ate there (admittedly about 10 years ago). Definitely try the goat leg.

I can agree with this. Yes, it's still open but sell a lung or two before you go because the prices are sky high (but worth it). Also make sure you make a booking. Just turning up will see you miss out on a table on Friday, Saturday nights.

Willunga's not a beach town per-se (I grew up at Aldinga, went to Wilunga High School). Port Willunga on the other hand is a nice town, with an awesome beach.
