PITFALLS CONVERTING COTTERED 2 COTTERLESS

Postby oldschoolfool » Sun Aug 30, 2009 1:49 pm

I'm making the change from cottered cranks to cotterless but there is a plethora of options. I'd like to retain the bottom bracket bearings that i have but need the crankshaft to be compatible. :? Seeking wisdom from anyone!!

why?

Just get a new cartridge BB like this and be done with all the fiddling around.

They are about $20 - $25 at your LBS.

The $25 price tag has me somewhat relieved. I am going to have a go at a modernised roadster, and I will be going over to cotterless cranks for that project.

I would still like to pursue retaining stronglight bearings.

You can get self-tightening (expanding) bottom-brackets - they are designed to fit into frames with damaged threads.

Just be aware that the thread length in the bottom bracket shell may not be long enough. Some fitting may be required!

What kind of bike do you have now, and what is the bottom bracket shell width (frame only, not the existing cups) ?.
