Two Riders, different speed, riding together

Postby whitestivo » Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:54 am

Person 1, averages 26kmh individual, bike good

Person 2 averages 31kmh individual, bike very good

How do you get the two to ride together. I've tried person 1 drafting person 2. I've tried person 2 running 80psi in tyres and wearing tshirt, and still no good.

What can I do to slow myself down, while still maintaining riding intensity. No point me just riding slow.

Should i just buy a $100 woolies MTB and cross train?

5km/h difference in average speed is a very large gap in ability. Your hope would be to train the slower rider fast and bring his av speed up.

Otherwise try riding a poorly serviced and the heaviest MTB with studded tyres inflated at 25psi.

Is any reason not to go MTB, or should I just get an old road bike like my previous trusty kuwahara 14 speed?

Ride a tandem, you both get to go fast.

Head for the hills. Each rider rides up at their own pace, ie as hard as possible. The first rider up then rides down again to where the other rider is and rides up again with them.
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?

A few mega sized "meals" from McVomits should bring you back down to his pace

Naaah, run 36 spoke training wheels with heavy hubs and the widest tyre you can use.

The hills idea is a good one, I'll use that thank you, as I can really push up first set, then come back down for easy set, bit like intevals

The question was really about ways to keep my workout strong, and yet slow me down enough to ride with her. She just doesn't push out the kms per week that I do on the bike as her favourite is running.

Do heavy rims and hubs make a huge difference? I thought that was always a bit of a marketing ploy to buy really expensive super light rims.

I got some old gatorskins lying around that are plenty heavy.

If the riders are similar morphologically speaking, then rider 1 would need another 50% more power to be able to ride next to rider 2.
That is a very big gap. Too big a gap for drafting to overcome and especially large when hills come into it.

I would suggest rider 2 schedule a recovery ride day when riding with rider 1.

35mm will work. I suspect you'll be limited by clearance on the frame/fork and brake.

Update

I bought myself an old school shogun katana, complete with 14speeds and 36 spoke rims. I has wanted an old school bike for a while, can be hard to find one in good nic.

Shes heavy, but a beauty. This will be new training bike until person 1 speeds up.

Then it might turn into a fixie for kicks. I'd post up a pic, but not sure how.
