Indi Condor-Lightweight
Postby zues » Mon Nov 02, 2009 7:32 pm
Its a Kuhawara frame with the inscription lightweight and another badge with Ishiwata Magny- there's more writing on it but to faded to read.
The seat post is 26.8mm.
Any ideas what type of steel this may be
Thanks

Their Magny tubesets came in two flavours, Magny X & Magny V.
I believe that it is a Manganese-Molybdenum alloy of steel (as is Reynolds 531) rather than the more common Chromium-Molybdenum (CroMo) alloy
The tubeset is seamed rather than seamless.
The following link is a great resource for finding out about steel tubesets:

Good luck with your Indi Condor!!

Even the garage door is a similar colour!
Mine originally had the Shimano 105 "Golden Arrow" group and most likely will again.
By the way that groupset will polish up really nicely with a bit of effort.

Wish I knew, it had already had a crappy repaint in white (and had no decals) before I repainted it green .zues wrote: That green frame looks nice what is it?
I used a buffing wheel on a bench grinder with an alloy buffing compound, then finished off with Autosolzues wrote: And what did you use to polish up that RD

I have the same frame myself with the same groupo on it, just missing the FD. decals have been almost scraped off can just read the indi condor. It has a kurahara headset on it and looked like kurahara lugwork so I figured it for a good quality kurahara frame. then I found 'by kurahara' written on the chainstay. the tube sticker is mostly gone can read the magny but all the other writing is rubbed/faded away. do you have any closeups of the tubing sticker? other than that the frame is in good condition.

Long time lurker first time poster here.
I resurrected this thread because I recently picked up one of these Indi Condor's and I had a few questions that I thought the experts around here could help me with. It is pretty much the same as is shown here: Magny V frame (decal is faded but legible) and it has pretty much complete Golden Arrow groupset except someone has swapped out the original brake levers for the suicide variety. I don't know much about these early Shimano components but the braking is truly awful. I am fixing it up for my son who wants a steel bike and this should do the job for a start. Everything works so it will mainly be a strip down and replace all the bearings/cables etc.
Anyway, the paint job is pretty chipped in places so I was planning on getting it blasted and powdercoated. I'm in Perth (North of the River) and if anyone could point me at a decent powdercoater here I would be grateful? I did get some quotes but one was OTT and the other couldn't do it until January (and they're miles away - southside).
Cheers
Simon

No doubt you are right. The blocks weren't too bad but I replaced them and did improve things. I was mainly referring to the older single pivot brakes vs the double pivots that I have got used too.ldrcycles wrote:I would assume ancient hardened brake pads would be the most likely cause, a few bucks on new pads should give a big improvement.
I didn't have much luck squeezing a better powder coating price nearby so I'm going to go with the Southside mob that everyone here seems to recommend for bikes. In the meantime I've caught the bug and picked up a Norco with Ishawata EX tubing and forks which is a bit nicer frame but has quite a lot of surface rust.

They shouldn't be "truly awful". While there's a little more flex in the older brakes they should be fine if OK.prador wrote:No doubt you are right. Check:
* dead pads (done - hope you put in ones as good as the ones in your double pivots - Swisstop or Koolstop or..)
* gumming of the caliper and pivots. Simply disassembling; cleaning; lubing and reassembly can do wonders.
* dead cable inners. Bent, rusted, frayed etc.
* rusted or worn cable outers
* lever problems (rare but not unheard of- particularly if someone has moved the lever and limited it's movement).
* finally, badly adjusted, perhaps to compensate for not-so-straight wheels
Yes, all other things being equal modern double pivots from the same brand/groupset should be noticeably better. But not chalk and cheese (with a few notable exceptions)

I replaced the outer and the cable and it wasn't too bad since my son insisted on using it before I could fix it up properly. Anyway, it's all moot now because it got flogged even though it had a pretty heavy duty cable lock on it. All I can say is it must have been pretty dark.Thoglette wrote:They shouldn't be "truly awful". Check:...
Not to worry, in the meantime I picked up a bike with a nice Ishiwata EX frame and forks so the project is still on.
