Training in the Rain

Postby lgbran » Sun Nov 22, 2009 12:29 pm

just had 40mm overnight according to rain gauge in yard.. Garden's happy however just trying to get the mental strength to cycle in the wet.. Mind you cyled all through winter.. tad wet but the wind was more the problem. Do many of you go out in inclemment conditions?.. am going to go for a swin afterwards but it's not like being out there on the bike..

Yes - HTFU, get the bike out and ride.

Return home and hose down bike, wipe down, lube and put away for next ride.

Simple plan really.

I enjoy riding in the rain. Its fine until it gets really heavy, then it kinda sucks. Its fine when the weather is warmer, but if its abit cooler, you have to try and stay warm. My coach has me on a plan with kms and efforts set out for certain days, so i do the kms in all weather (unless its ridiculous). Just remember to take it easy in the corners in the rain.

Riding on wet roads is not for me....too much crap on the roads + dangerous to corner....not to mention reduced visibilty for motorists.
Me....I'll check the gym timetable and do a spin class, it's a lot safer. :D

Yes, provided its not really bucketing down (i.e. I'll ride in 'showers' but not 'rain' by BOM definitions!)

Best things to make wet weather riding more bearable:
* cycling cap!! (greatly reduces drops hitting your glasses)
* mudguard(s)
* rain jacket or vest
* shoe covers
* flashing lights for safety

Also tape over the little vent holes on the bottom of your shoes if you have them...

The annoying thing for the next day is the soggy shoes.

Today was a good day for that, plenty of rain here in melbourne.

i always enjoy a good ride in the rain, as long as it is not to cold...
My tip:
Ride in the rain without leg/armwarmers, once the rain stops put dry* arm/legwarmers on to warm you up.
(* you can keep them dry by putting them in a snap-lock bag)

When shoes get wet, stuff them with newspaper when you get home. They dry out overnight with ease.

Or seal them with silicone sealant before tightening screws on cleats etc.,. That, plus tight fitting shoe covers, means no soggy feat or shoes.

I dont have water proof shoe covers, but i find that wraping my shoes with GLAD WRAP then put my normal shoe covers does the trick. 300meters of GLADWRAP for about $6-$7 lasts a very long time :lol: ... Front mudflaps a must to prevent legs/shoes being soaked from the splash off the front wheels...
