Opinions of Torrens River Linear Park
Postby Amplifier » Mon Nov 02, 2009 11:09 am
What do people think of the Torrens River Linear Park? I havent been on it but im guessing its down hill mostly going to the coast and uphill the other way being that it follows a river.
Would it be a good trail for a beginner going up or is it too steep?

I live on the trail between the beach and the city.
It's a simple, rolling trail. You can't exactly fly along it, due to walkers, dogs, kids etc, but it's a pleasant ride with nice scenery. Lots of families and weekend riders frequent the path, so pretty easy, really. Steep is not a word I would use to describe it.
I don't know what it's like east of the city.

In a word 'steep'. {couldn't resist that].
Actually I think it's much better from the city to the hills - where it truncates at the blackberry bushes at the base of Gorge Road's gorge. It's braided, so you can choose one of 2 or 3 paths and get a bit lost sometimes, and a spur goes off to Tea Tree Plaza, which is good. Condition varies from good to less than acceptable and there's often dogwalkers etc on it. From the city heading east there's a couple of sharp uphills around Hackney ut they're all only 100m or so. Up around Dernancourt and Highbury there's some pretty steep patches as well, but short. Overall it's a great ride. Set yourself the task of riding 'sea to vines' one day, then back. Because it meanders along the river valley you'll find it about a 50km ride one way.

Down towards the coast it was blocked off near Tapley's Hill Road (well it was a month so ago).

I ride the Linear Park track quite regularly. Its a good ride. I start at the weir and either ride to the beach, where you can then follow the path along the coast all the way to Glenelg. Its a reasonably flat 30km round trip. Its a pleasant ride, but the condition of the track in places is quite bumpy because of the tree roots. The ride up to the hills IMO is much better. The track is in pretty good condition and its got a good mix of flat and uphill. Its also quite picturesque. This is generally a 35km to 40km round trip back to the weir.
As with most shared tracks you need to be mindful of pedestrians, dogs and kids (particularly around the city). To do the whole in one go (70km) is pretty good goal.

I reckon the section east of the city needs an occasional pass with a street sweeper. I don't think I'd enjoy riding it on skinny little roadie tyres. A couple of big fat knobblies makes for some welcome cushioning over the degraded parts of the track.

I used to ride it regularly from TTP to Mouth.
Different council areas you pass through are noticeable in terms of maintenance, upkeep.
I now use it as my return to home arvo commute, from Nth Adelaide to TTP.
Know it like the back of my hand and all the spots to be either left or right or bum off saddle for bumps.I ride it on a 23/25 700c combo and used to ride the Bowery on ,harsh as it was.
A bell is a must though as you will need it warn the peds you are coming.
Currently building a Cro Mo MTB with slicks for the commute duties and path riding.

^do tell?
I've lived 20m away from it for the last 25 years. It's excellent, SA needs more paths like the Linear Park.
