Recumbents and all feet forward machines

I just ran across this video compilation of crashes from the Pedal Prix series. If you ever wondered why they have strict rules about roll bars, side intrusion, four point seat belts and no internal projections, this will answer all your questions! see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NsT4FdHQAc&NR=1The RACV Energy Breakthrough race in Maryborough last Sunday was abandoned partway through due to rain and squally wind.

You know I always question the quotes "the velomobiles are the future of transportation", I heard 4 wheels are far superior in cornering, re greenspeeds quad velo. It's a shame our laws dont allow for moped cars.

Isn't it more an issue of the centre of gravity? All those vehicles looked to reduce air resistance/weight by keeping themselves relatively narrow.

Correct. Pedal prix vehicles must have a minimum track of 600mm, whereas most commercial trikes tend to make the track width the maximum that will fit though a house doorway for practical reasons. Full specs here: http://www.pedalprix.com.au/files/documents/2009%20Vehicle%20Specifications.pdf

I remember a few years back i was racing there, took a corner a little too fast and started to tip. Just my luck, another trike was on its way around the corner and knocked me back on 4 wheels Was some seriously hairy stuff now and then though, i remember when one of the teams with a tent near ours had a kid come back with some brake in his leg D:
