Canberra Day weekend BBQ/Ride

Postby Robdog » Fri Feb 05, 2010 10:03 pm

So I thought maybe we could have a bit of a shindig over the long weekend for members (and partners/friends/family etc.) involving a BBQ and Ride (either or both), and possibly integrate the Hot Air Balloon event in there somewhere too.

What I'm after is some expressions of interest, and suggestions for time/place/distance/route are more than welcome

Why not join the 7-800 others and do the big canberra ride? which also is running along side the balloon festival.

Because I had no idea it was on
I thought that it would be a good opportunity to meet and greet other members of the forum as well, plus I've already had a brief discussion with a couple members who think Saturday is the go, which also leaves you free to do both in the weekend if you so choose

I was thinking a longish ride (50k+), but I'm open to suggestions, and we could organise shorter rides along the same route with meetings at certain points if we needed to.
The BBR is only 20k's and looks like a very social pace. I think I'll be giving it a miss at 30 bux a head too.
I'd like to try and cater for everyone's needs if possible but if there isn't much interest, It'd probably be better to just sort out some smaller rides among ourselves.

How about I say please post your preferred day, time and ride length

Hey everyone, I feel a bit bad after pushing this so much, but I'm afraid I have a bowls commitment on the weekend, so I won't be able to make it. Hope you all have a good time if you choose to go ahead

Will be doing the Big Ride on Monday with my 1yo and partner. If you see someone on a Merida MTB with Conti CityContact slicks with a copper coloured Chariot CX1 trailer on the back, thats me. Say Hi! Should be a nice ride, just wish it were a little longer. Travelling there and back from Watson should add a few k's.

Big Canberra Bike Ride wasnt so big in this weather. Still good though. 48kms total for us. Bikes are a mess, taking the rest of the day off.

Saw some stuff on the news last night saying something like 800 pre-reg and 1500 on the day (total or registrations??). But the news footage never showed more than about ten riders at a time - gave me the impression that they news people forgot to turn up and took some shots of the tail end stragglers or something. Can't find any news/press release info... almost like a non-event. Go figure...

I doubt it would of been 1500, maybe 150. Last year on a beautiful warm sunny morning they had about 700 riders. I know they have been trying to crack 1000 riders over the last couple of years, but from what I have heard they have never reached 800.
It would be good if they put up actual stats on the website, as well as the online form that was "coming soon", but never did.

I saw the news on Win. The story showed about half a dozen people rolling out of the start - maybe they were the late wave. we didn't get clear of the pack until about the carillion. Mr 12 made it the whole way on his 24 inch jobbie and was stoked. And soaked.

Yep - I was pretty surprised when I thought he said 1500. Mind you, the evil twins were being quite noisy at the time.

It was a lot different to what I expected. Especially numbers wise. Seemed to only be about 2-300 people starting at 8:15. And even then, prolly only about 50 odd actually started riding at the off. I didnt see it on ABC news, assuming it wasnt big enough to be news worthy.
