Completed: Forum Update Thursday 18.03.2010 (AT) 10:30 PM

Postby AUbicycles » Mon Mar 15, 2010 8:07 pm

A short note / advance warning that the forum update is now fixed in for Thursday 18.03.2010

Approx 10:30pm Sydney EST the forum will go into maintenance mode - no forum access
Updates could take 2 - 4 hours (may more if there are issues).

The forum will be temporary turned off and updated. Due to the size of the forum it is a big task and has taken a lot of hours already preparing and doing test runs - aim is for minimal disruption and no lost posts.

--

Once the update(s) are complete, the forum will be accessible again - it will be essentially the same though with one or two new things that the updated software brings with it. Following the update - performance will be tuned. The performance improvements are both targeting hardware and software so that the site/forum is faster and there are less problems during peak hours.

Any questions? Ask here.

Cheers

Would be good if you can give us a better idea of the actual time on Thursday evening than "at some time" but understand if you can't Chris :-).

Always appreciate the time and effort you put in along with the mods anyway.

What new features does the updated software bring?

I was kind of thinking that without a specific time then everyone would make other plans - extended 5 course meal followed by a midnight snack.
Kickoff may be 10pm however I need to confirm - when I get confirmation it will be included in the initial post.

For the software improvements / updates, you can have a look at phpbb. Certainly security improvements and I understand a few more functions. I didn't see anything mindblowing or totally different however staying current is pretty important and I havn't been able to tackle this sooner.

Anything that makes it easier for me to remotely destroy spambots would be appreciated.

Usual Kudos to the members that hit the report button on spam applies :D

A single page message during the upgrade, along the lines of...
'The ACF is being updated and will be back on line shortly...please check back later.'
would be good to let users know what is happening.

I will see what I can do about that page - Usually it works exactly like that.

Use the Force Shaun - once I hook this baby up you'll be having laser beams coming out of your eyes and shooting anything that moves :)

Maybe... you could watch the Bruce Willis film "Surrogates" on Thursday night.

Thanks Adam (webman).
Adam of Websitemanagers has been kindly supporting me (server side) during the update and it seems that all has gone smoothly.

I have noticed a few minor cosmetic issues - and will be onto them plus will shortly add two new forums.

Thank you everyone for the patience and understanding.

The update has fixed the second login screen flashing up after logging in and the logout which used to hang forever.
Everything seems to be running smoothly. Thanks Christopher and Adam :D

Hmmm.. since the update "view active topics" (my favourite button on BNA/ACF) has only returned 6 topics, all of them from either the new Vélo Femme or Cycling Health boards.
I'm using Safari and have "display posts from last 7 days" set

This is probably temporary as all caches were purged so the system is starting from scratch. eep you eye on it, I would assume in 6 days from now it would be back to normal.

Me too, as interesting as those articles are, I only need to read them once.

The articles were previously there though after the migration last year were turned off.
They are only on the entry page. If there is majority support (please start a new topic in forum feedback) then I will consider removing it.

I've never used the "view active topics" button, so just tried it and it only showed topics from Women's cycling or Cycling Health.
I'm sure there must be other active topics on the board.

Thanks for the persistence in this. I thought it may have just been due to the upgrade however went through the settings and found a new option to activate this - and it has been done for all public forums (visible to guests). Just the forum feedback and halfway cafe are not included in the list.

Cheers

A follow up on this change - just got some errors accessing the forum and have to keep an eye on it. The forum database goes through and skims the topics, and opens a lot of connections to do so - throwing real users out.

If it does become problem, we may have to look for another solution, so keep me updated.

I use the "view new posts" link, which gives me all posts that have been updated since my last visit. I think the "view active topics" will give you threads that contain posts that have been very recently updated ie in the last X number of minutes.

Active topics working as it used to to do. The board appears to rank topics by the date of the most recent post, however I think it factors in the view count as well as I feel sure I've seen topics rise to the top on the basis of views when there have been no new posts for a while.
To see "view new posts" one must be logged in. "View active topics" is always available.
